Different brakes and rotors front and rear?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just had service and I need rear brakes and rotors. I've decided on Akebono and ECS slotted rotors. Is it ok to do this while the front remains stock?

The easy answer is go ahead and replace both but I need tires too so minimizing the expense all at once is an important factor too. Am I better to just go with stock pads and rotors if I don't want to do both now?

    Thanks!

Perfectly fine to me. Think, many of us upgraded to front bbk, which is dramatically different to rear brakes. But be aware your rear wheels is going to be a lot cleaner than your front wheels. I'd suggest you do front brake pads at the same time.

OEM will probably cost just as much of not more. You will be fine holding off on the front imo

For rears, you can almost get Myele rotors for the back and still get Akebono pads all the way around for the cost of just OEM rear rotors. Check out ECS or Rock Auto.

Would it be ok to change front pads and not the rotors? Pads are the cheap part

Just do the rears for now and do the front rotors/pads when you have the cash...replacing everything at once is your best bet brotha

This too. I went with Meyle rotors and Akebono pads for all four corners from fcpeuro.com. all of it shipped was $404. Totally worth it IMO. Sure, not as pretty as slotted rotors, but just as effective!

Depends on how much is left on the rotors, if they need replacing soon or are lipped/scored, might not be worth it bedding new pads into them. But again, if all you want is OEM or equivalent rotors, there are some alternatives price wise.

Not to hijack the thread I'm in the similar predicament. Rears needs to be replaced and thinking about doing all at the same time. Is Akebono pads with Meyle rotors a better setup than Stoptech rotors and hawk pads? I researched and noticed it was pretty common for the S4. Thx.

I don't have an S4, but I just swapped my rotors and pads this past weekend on my A4. I went with Zimmermann rotors, and Akebono ceramics all around and the total cost with the G2 kit to paint my rotors was $392.xx, but I did all of the work myself. For my application, I found that Amazon was cheaper for some parts; while I used ECS for others. 2 day free shipping was the winner, because ECS wanted $35 to ship just the front rotors. Not to mention that I bought my front and rear pads separately from Amazon for $124, but the same set would have cost $180 + shipping from ECS. I chose to do all 4 corners at once, but you would be fine doing both sides on the rear now, and doing the fronts in the future.

I'm thinking now of passing on the slotted rotors. This is front and rear.

    Akebono (115.71)and Meyle (109.98) = $225.69

    Akebono (115.71) and ECS slotted (369.90) = $485.61

Slotted rotors look nice, and have functional value when you're really pushing the car, but IMO they aren't that functional on the street. Not to mention that you can open the door to issues later on and/or decreased pad life.
