Bought my first b5 today.

Hey guys, long time Audi guy here. Always wanted to build a b5 so today I picked one up on the cheap. It's a 2000 2.8 5speed manual, quattro. Seems to be well equipped for the year. 150k miles, new tires, box of sale receipts came with the car. Engine cranks but wont start, so I got the car for $650



When I got the car home



Washing off a whole lot of neglect. It's hot as hell today and I got a fever unexpectedly, so full paint correction will follow, after replacing the shit fenders and screwed on front bumper :(



Interior is decently clean, I cleaned it up a bit just to take photos, as the entire interior will be for sale soon. Plans for this car are

-Full S4 interior swap from a donor car
-2.7t swap, keep it stage 2 while I work out the kinks.
-replace any body panels that look like shit, and probably plastidip it for now. All I care about at the moment is getting the 2.7 in and get the car running.



Oh, I also own a b8 A4, and in the past have owned a BT b6 1.8t :). This is my 3rd build so I'm doing it exactly how I want it, at my own pace.

I have a huge soft spot for the b5 sedan, and for the 2.7t. Many s4's are either insanely priced or beat to shit, I figured I'll build my own hahah. I've wanted to do this build for so long, glad its coming together.

Also! Entire interior and motor are being parted if anyone needs anything! I can ship most items.

-Floor mats
-2.8 heads

The issue is that the 2.8 heads (like the AEB) don't see a great power increase until you are way up there in power. I wouldn't use the heads for a very long time, and they are cheap enough to pick up. I tossed em to a buddy of mine.

Also popped the hood just to get a look at how things are under there. Cant wait to rip this engine out!

Ive sourced a 2.7 with 100k on it, zero play in the turbos, stock it's whole life. Will be picking it up when I get back from a trip to Cali/Colorado on August 1st.

Also found an s4 avant being parted that has the entire interior and engine for very cheap, but I'm worried about the fact that it is a 2001+ and it's an auto, I'd rather not deal with SAI and the possibility of fitment issues with an auto engine.


One question I have for people who use the 2.8 5speed...I hear you use a performance 2.8 clutch but need some sort of spacer to make it work? Any more details on said spacer?

Continued removing A4 interior tonight. Also discovered water under the carpet...the rain tray drains were totally clogged, so I removed the rubber o-rings and made sure they were clear. Hopefully I'm good to go now and no damage was done.

Figured out the spacer I need should just be the stock trans spacer from an s4. Easy enough.

Nut up and put in an 01E. You'll be glad you did.

But to answer the question, and 01A can fit a 240mm flywheel, so I do not believe you'd need a spacer or anything like that to fit an S4 clutch into the 01A. However, there is a possibility you'd have to clearance the bellhousing a bit.

Really though, get an 01E.

I could pop in the 01E at any point. Right now I'd like to get the motor in and running, and adress other possible issues first (suspension, brakes, control arms ect..though a friend of mine does have an 01A for $500, and one of the s4 parts cars I have found has the rear diff and drive shaft I would need.

Anyways, most of the interior is out!, just waiting on a set of radio removal keys to pull the dash.

Onward to remove the lock carrier today, drain all fuids, remove exhaust, and get ready to pull the motor!

So at this point I am dirty, tired, and pretty buzzed.





Lock carrier off, fuel disconnected, fluids drains, engine mounts are free, tomorrow I'll be taking a sawzall to the exhaust, and hopefully breaking this thing free and having it out by Friday.

Holy shit. . Next spring the plan is to do fueling/ frankenturbos. I found a full interior locally for $600 now, all black, in great shape. When I get back from vacation I'll be working on this as many hours as possible. I'd love to roll to H2oi in this thing but that might be a little too optimistic.

Go down to a h20, park your car for the weekend, and ride a bike. That place is just silly. Didn't go last year because of weather, but year prior totally turned me off. Depending on info from other this year will have the most impact in my decision if I go next year. But definitely not going this year to sit in 45 min traffic to travel a whopping I0 blocks max.

Over all I agree with getting the 01E
But the 2.8 5 spd behind a 2.7t is a lot of fun
on the low end and midrange It almost feels faster in that power range.

I've been for 6 years in a row now. Last year I still went with the bad weather 3 weeks out of ACL surgery on crutches. I got because about 40 of my friends go and I always love it. I barely even go any car related things, I go mini golfing, out to eat, hit the board walk and go to the beach. I've had fun every year rain or shine, though shine is obviously always better.

So today again battling the heat we got the car to a point where the engine/ trans are totally just resting on their mounts.

This morning:

-Removed heater core hoses
-removed power steering lines
-pulled front axles
-removed exhaust (scrapped it for $75! Whoo)
-Unbolted driveshaft
-Motormounts unbolted
-removed shifter assembly
-undid the trans mounts.

She'll be plucked when I return from vacation on the same day I pick up my engine and ssac catless piggy pipes :]

1) Order some motor mounts (stern?)
2) Clutch
3) Timing belt kit
4) SSAC downpipes
5) Snub mount
6) Order new coolant temp sensor
7) Need new spider hose kit
