    Ceramic coat on 3M?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys. So I got my car paint corrected with ceramic coating a couple months ago. It looks amazing, still holding up very well, but my retailer didn't put the ceramic on the 3M I have on the hood and front fenders as he wasn't sure it would work well. You can't tell the difference except for immediately after washing where I can see the protected parts aren't as hydrophobic as the remainder of the car.

My question for you. Would you have ceramic put on the existing wrap (any first hand experiences?) or would you have the 3M removed and have underneath coated. It is 3 years old and could probably use replacing or removal in the next year or two anyway.

My guy would do either for me as he is interested in how the coating holds up. I'm doing a lot less highway miles in the car now and am comfortable going bra-less.

    All opinions welcomed.

lol let's put a condom on the condom, to protect the condom...

No, don't ceramic coat your paint protection film. The first generation films were to be treated as paint (they could be waxed as long as it was a non-abrasive wax); however, the latest generation of films employ some high tech features such as self-healing, which you could probably harm by adding a ceramic coat to. Also, the whole point of the film to begin with is to protect the car, why are you looking to protect the protector?

Neither. As TTRStud said, there's no sense in "protecting the protection".

I did it on my Suntek ppf. Have had no issues what so ever. Beads just like the rest of the car.

No reason to ceramic coat under a film, adds no protection and makes it more difficult for film to adhere. On my xpel film they use a "sport" coating. It is a ceramic pro product but for maintenance. Runs me $80 for a hand wash and two coats which should last up to a year. I do it twice a year because I have no garage and car is a daily driver. Film is more porous than paint so uses two coats of "sport" to achieve the level of hydrophobic I prefer. Xpel also makes a sealant for film which I have not tried. If you no longer have a need for the film then removal and ceramic coat is a longer lasting product for sure.

Thanks guys. It's the self healing stuff so I'll just carry on and remove it in a year or two when it starts to degrade.

If you read the post it's because I now have a very hydrophobic ceramic protected 75% of the car while the 25% with the clear isn't quite the same. Essentially wondering if I should apply the same product to that to make it more even or remove it and leave the paint unwrapped and then coat it. I didn't think it was that confusing or hilarious.

    Ceramic coat on 3M?

So the fact that the front isn't as hydrophobic as the rest is just bothering you?

If you're set on doing something, I'd coat over the clear bra.
