Anyone here done a DIY clutch change? S5

    Hello,

Has anyone here done a DIY clutch change on the S5? My clutch feels very gritty with a very small biting point and probably well past it's lifespan (110k miles). I have a flywheel/clutch instruction set from ECS tuning which is very in depth, plus a pretty useless alldatadiy subscription. Just curious if anyone here has attempted it themselves in a garage (I'm talking jack stands, floor transmission jack)? Any pain points I should look out for, or if I should give it to the mechanics?

    Cheers

I did my own clutch job on my S5 and if you don't have a lift the easiest thing to do is to pull the engine and transmission together and separate them once they are out. Our transmissions are really tall, so you would have to have the car almost 30" or so off the ground.

Once you get it out it is fairly straightforward forward. The biggest gotcha is that you have to unbolt the flywheel from the flex plate before you can separate engine and trans. This is because of the way audi designed our flywheels. The half shaft for the front actually goes through the gap in the flywheel so it must be removed before the flywheel/clutch assembly can come out of the bell housing. They did this to move the motor back ~4" for better balance.

It seems like a lot of work but if you take your time it's not that bad. Our group of friends have done 6-7 motor pulls in the last 18 months.

Thanks. Yeah it looks like you can't get the trans out with normal jack stands. But reading further, it seems like you can disconnect it from the engine and move it back enough to remove the clutch pack and flywheel. Did you try that first, or went straight to removing the engine/trans assembly? Bit limited for space, so I'd like to try and avoid pulling out the engine. Are the screws on the trans sufficient to support it when you took it out?

Changing out the clutch/flywheel assembly while it's under car is going to be an extreme pain. Totally not worth it.
