    Looking for some advice----

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Noticed a very small puddle of antifreeze under the Audi this morning after I pulled out from the garage.....No big deal--I pulled it back in and took the wife's auto to run my errands----Got home and started looking for the leak----Long story short---It's the damn RMS---the auto has only 65,000 miles on it and the damn Rear Main leak is leaking coolant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I've owned this car since new and it's had 3-coolant flushes in its lifetime with the last one occurring with the timing belt service I preformed back in April....DAMN!!!!
Normally this wouldn't be a big issue but dropping a tranny, now, is a BIG deal.....My 63 year old arthritic ass isn't up to this anymore....My wife and I did a clutch back in 2001 with the vehicle up on jack-stands and patio blocks and it was troublesome back then----the body wont co-operate this time....That coupled with the wife telling me "NO FUCK'N WAY" and a group of friends offering to simply hand me tools has left me with trying to locate a local shop to preform the service---DAMN!!!!
So here's the question---I'm in Connecticut (Seymour)---Could someone provide a recommendation for a reliable shop to preform this work---The auto is insanely clean having NEVER seen winter driving. Hell- I was able to remove the upper control arm pinch bolt with my fingers when I replaced an outer CV joint boot last month...that's how clean this auto is....
    TIA
PS- NO frigg'n laughing or age jokes PLEASE!
    PSS- Auto is a 2000 B5 S4 6-sp Stage II (September 1999 build date)

Dam, that sucks to bad you're not local to me. I would have helped you out. Instead of bringing it into a shop so, they can rip you off. Maybe you can find locals in your area that can lend you a helping hand. Best of luck.

Are you really sure it's the RMS? Many times the leak will come from something like the after run pump under the IM and can easily run down the back and make it look like it's coming from another place.

    Coolant through your RMS?

Sure it isn't your aux water pump leaking down through the bell housing and out the bottom? It eventually made my clutch slip.
That's what happened mine, but I only found out AFTER buying a new rear seal and pulling the tranny.

Could also be the coolant hardpipe o-rings under the intake. Thought I had a RMS problem too, and ended up being this.

RMS isn't going to leak coolant unless your oil pan is full of coolant

    Thanks for the support guys--
YEAH- I checked EVERYTHING---I was really hoping it was the after-run pump---No joy--It was dry there...ALL of the plumbing on the rear of the engine was also dry....The hoses to and from the coolant bottle were dry---lines to the turbos....Everything up front...even the block drain bolt....The only area I couldn't get my eyes and hand on was the RMS....I don't know where else coolant could come from...
PS- NO coolant in my oil

There's an O-ring in the heater core hose connector where that hose mates to the rear coolant flange. This O-ring flattens and becomes brittle over time, which can cause a coolant leak (and has on 2 of my 1.8T cars - but it's the same deal as the 2.7T).
When there is a leak from this O-ring you get coolant dripping onto the transmission.
Might be worth checking out in any case.

The aluminum flange the rear main seal is pressed into has coolant channels. The retaining gasket can leak coolant.

Thanks for that info- I wasn't aware of that at all.

    OK-I'm a bit of a dumb ass...
I spent some more time with the car re-checking some of the items you folks suggested ...Got the y-pipe off so I could look a little closer and found pink fluid down in the valley...I'll get the intake off tomorrow and post some photos...Feeling a little STUPID in jumping to conclusions...
Obviously Audi felt it was important to supply this engine with an after-run coolant pump for the turbos...In the 16 plus years I've owned this auto I've NEVER heard this pump operate...The pump on my wife's VW GTI is LOUD...is the Audi pump that quiet????
I've never upgraded the pump temperature sensor-I'm still running the stock OE sensor...Is this pump necessary for a street motor????
What do you folk suggest-replace the pump or install a by-pass.

    Loking for some advice----

You'll want to keep it. It helps coolant run through those hot turbos to cook them down. Go bypass for sure. Amazon has the part for like 40 bucks. And my pump is loud.
