Hey guys I bought me an air compressor this thing is a beast and and i love it but the gun i baught is a piece of 💩...I tried to remove my wheel lug nuts and it wouldn't even remove them wtf. I baught that central pnematic from harbor freight for $30 thinking it was ok for diy and it sucked I realized I need a heavy duty impact wrench. I wanted to break loose mu cv axle bolts and no go. Tried to break my allen for the cv axle in the tip no go. What gun do you guy recommend so i can break anything loose? And please keep it less $100 not looking to spend $400 on a gun. This is what i baught. uploadfromtaptalk1468554500018.jpg

What is the pressure regulator on the compressor set to? seems fishy a brand new impact gun can't break loose anything you mentioned, even if it was a cheap one.

It was set to 90psi even though i can go higher up to 150psi well i read reviews on it and is a piece of crap it has 1 star reviews lol. So i know is the gun 100% i have seen so many and undecided because i'm still a noob to this whole air tools thing. It was the central pneumatic 300lbs of torque my ass. I set my lug nuts to 50lbs just to toy around and the gun wouldn't even break that loose.but i have put air in my tires and painted some stuff and works like a charm.

Get the 1/2" drive earthquake model from Harbor Freight. The $30 cheapo is weak, but I used the earthquake one to remove both a crank bolt and axle bolts. Always, always, always check the reviews when buying from HF. You should still be able to take the other impact back.

A lot will also depend on the cfm rating of your compressor. . I use ingersol rand tools.

x2. I have this same impact. It was strong enough to break axle nuts on my jeep.

FYI, your compressor is going to be LOUD... I have a 30 gallon, cast iron pump, belt driven compressor, has been going strong for 10+ years. LOVE having air tools...

Ditto. I have a 24" pipe I put over my 20" breaker bar. You get out about 3 feet and the axle nut is no problem.

That compressor you bought isn't the best, but it should probably do for most impacting. You'll want something with a CFM of 5 or more. Getting up to 8 or 9 is best, but you usually can't get that high with a small compressor like that.

That impact you bought is weak shit. I wouldn't buy anything at Harbor Freight you don't expect to throw away. So, I agree with the above, get a reasonably priced Ingersol.

Or, spend a little extra and get this thing. It is a beast. Mac re-brands them to their own name, or at least did a a few years ago. http://www.tooltopia.com/aircat-1200...cAZhoCrBnw_wcB

Just look at torque rating on the gun.. To break anything loose though a breaker bar is what you'd want. Any impact that can compete with a $60 breaker will cost hundreds.

The 700 ft lbs rated one from harbor freight actually works very well for the home mechanic. I have been using mine for 10 years, just have to be sure to add a couple drops of oil (as with any air tool). I also have their 3/4 inch impact, and all 3 size air ratchets... They have worked well for years on the trails (in rain/snow) working on mine and many other club members rigs.

Professional grade tools are nice, but for most home mechanics use them so infrequently that a lot of harbor freights stuff will work.

(I used their 4" angle grinder and sawzall to do most of my custom metal work on my old jeep)

probably using a pretty long 1/4" hose too which creates a pretty big pressure drop from the compressor to the gun

Dont forget to check craigslist for used impact wrenches. People unload quality tools on there all the time.

Throw a liquid separator/knock-out on the compressor too. Living in FL with high humidity will kill air tools unless you get the moisture out of the line.

This. I think you're compressor is set too low. Mine is similar in size if not the same and it breaks almost everything loose.

While normally I'd agree, a home mechanic has no use for professional level tools. Its a complete and utter waste of money. If your livlihood depends on them then they absolutely make sense. But for a home mech? no way. HF crap is absolutely fine. I have a decent quality Bostitch pancake compressor and use a variety of HF air tools with it. Yea they're not the best, but they absolutely get the job done. I used one of their brad nailers for work in my house and it was awesome. Sure there are better ones but for my uses it was just fine.

I saw it mentioned before but if you look at the max PSI for a compressor it is almost false advertising because that doesn't really help much. You have to look at the amount of flow @ 90psi (or whatever you gun/impact needs) and see if the compressor and gun match up and will work well. You can have a gun that will run 300ft/lbs under 6CFM but if you are running it at 3CFM with a 1/4" hose it will not perform as mentioned.

You have to make sure all elements line up. Basically saying a car can hit 180 mph, but if that car doesn't have the proper amount of gas, it sure won't move.

Side note: HF tools work decent, sometimes you do get a dud, return it and try again if you have everything else set up proper and make sure you have the pressure reg on your tank set as well.

Good luck with the air set up. I would go with a retractable hose reel as well :D

I figured I would chime in. Although you are asking for an impact to work with your new compressor I must recommend their electric 1/2" impact. It's like $35 and works well. If stuff is really on there you may have to break it free but I cant think of anything it wouldnt take off for me. I work on cars quite a bit more than the average person and live in the rust belt Ohio and it's pretty bad ass. Not to mention (depending on your setup) it's usually easier to run a 100' extension cord outside than uncoiling and recoiling a hose. Plus you don't have your ears blasted off by the compressor kicking on every five spins of the impact.

Basically I'm saying sure find a good pnumatic impact but if you have an extra $35 this is on my buddies and my "best tool deals" list. Add IRWIN extractors and you're set . Going off subject. But I picked up the craftsman nextec 12v drill and 1/4" impact and I use the impact everywhere. It drives a wood screw straight through a 2x4 but also is small and light so working on cars with it is hugh.

Next investment is a cordless battery powered 1/2" impact but would probably go with a snapon or ingersoll which is $400-$700 and hard to justify over a $12 breaker that does the job.

In lieu of an air compressor, an 18V 1/2" square drive impact wrench can do a good job as well. I use this model for swapping winter/summers and have no problems breaking lugs loose. Also, definitely suggest using Torque limiting sockets then obviously finish with torque wrench, if you end up tightening with the impact.

IIRC, CV bolts and front hub bolts are one time use, but are torqued at 140ft-lbs/190 Nm plus 180° for a M16 bolt. So get something with max torque rating above 200ft*lb.

This is the one I got. It's a beast and was on sale for $119 with the hi-cap battery and charger. I debated getting air tools and a bigger compressor, but I don't really have the space and this is way easier than lugging a hose around. Plus, you can take it with you if you need to!

I almost got this HF compressor until I saw the Husky 26Gal. They take Lowe's coupons too. I got mine for 220 about.

But the earthquake series pneumatic tools from Hf are beast. Well worth the money all day. Make sure you maintain them. Oil them up before using them for the day.
