Need advice for buying a S4 b7 Avant

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
my main concern is about the engin and auto transmission.

the car im looking for have 100k miles ( canadian spec )
the issues with the chain and oil consumtion is less important with late b7 then early b6 ?
the auto 6 speed tranmssion is reliable ? i own previous auto 5 speed in my a6/allroad c5 and add lots of issue.

i should wait and found a good b6/b7 avant with manual 6 ?

    any advice will be welcome

    thx

I've had both. Its personal preference - go drive both. I've never heard of many issues regarding TIP tranny its pretty strong. 6 speed can have bad synchros.

They're are other things to worry about than the transmission. Oil consumption/scored cylinder walls-- my vote go with the 6 speed....

Get a PPI check compression etc...

I purchased my 6-spd Avant (2007) with 105K miles, now up to 113K. Typical cold start chain rattle, but otherwise great! No signs of impending timing catastrophe or clutch explosion.... However I have tracked down a lower mileage engine that has had the timing service and will be installing that sometime soon. While it's out, will replace clutch, mounts, gaskets, etc.

it has been a great car so far! I bought it knowing that the timing would probably have to be addressed at some point and budgeted that in. I have been through my B5 S4 enough times to be relatively comfortable tearing into the B7.

I can also ride my bike to work, so I have a "backup plan" ; )

Track down a 6-spd manual, you'll be glad you did.

Manual is the way to go! What is your budget like if you don't mind me asking? You might want to set some money aside for inevitable repairs since it's a high mileage car. I bought my sedan at 101k miles and repaired the AC compressor, drivers side window regulator, coolant expansion tank, both engine mounts and valve cover gaskets within the first 2 months, haven't had anything major happen since and thankfully haven't had any timing chain issues apart from the usual cold start rattles this v8 is susceptible to. Best of luck! Get it checked out by a mechanic before you buy it, you can never catch everything from a test drive.

I find a very nice and clean b6 avant manual http://www.konigservicesauto.com/aud...agon-2005.html

Get the manual forsure. I bought my 07 with 85k and now has 109k within 2 years. No major problems at all with 70% city driving. Just needed new snub mount and diff mount to minimize the slack. Just change your transmission fluid and diff on schedule and it should last forever if you dont abuse it. Actually just change the fluids right when you get your car because 80% of the people don't change their trans diff fluids. After the change with Redline trans fluid your trans will shift sooo smooth

Bonus: I learned how to drive manual with my 07 btw so it took a beating on my trans and clutch for a good year
