    02 s6 rear strut nut

    Does anyone know a trick to remove the rear strut nut that holds the mount to the strut without the special tool? I don't understand why it can't just be in Allen head Like the fronts.

    Is it the "slotted" top nut thing?

    VW has been using that nut for decades. Years ago I made one in a bout 5 minutes by grinding a deep 15mm socket so it fit the slots on the nut. I think it worked great for about a decade then broke.
    Next time I'd use an impact socket.

    Is it this?

    If you're not going to reuse the damper, just use a vice grips to hold the shaft while you loosen the nut.

    see the link below, if you look at the picture of 1017 A, you can see the tool used to hold the shock rod from spinning. the real problem is the nut you are trying to loosen, is recessed in the shock mount, much like the fronts, just not with the Allen head fitting which would have made things much easier.

    I dropped the old and new shock off at my shop and shop this morning. I am sure an impact gun should do the trick and of course, mine is shot.
