Wow, you have probably the best 3.0T to upgrade. The factory derated power on the Q5 so dramatically to make room for the higher output SQ5. Well, we turn the power back up.

The gains are bonkers! Start with roughly 270 HP, and end up with 435 HP on stage 1, with 93 octane.

yea, I'm still nervous about reliability bc this is my first German car. called a local dealer and he said he has the names of the local audi dealer that is tuner friendly.

I'm leaning towards doing it tho!

I wouldn't worry at all. I've used APR Tuning on all my Audi/VW vehicles and I swear by them 110%! I think the key is to go to a great dealership that has the right backing. I personally went to Drive Auto Works in Clifton, NJ were I've dealt with Dion numerous times and he and his team have never failed to deliver high quality workmanship and customer service! Search around your area or call the guys at APR and get their advice, ask them who's ordering the most and has high level workmanship. As far as dealership finding out? I wouldn't worry about it. Be friendly to them and tip the service guy and I'm sure they won't do you wrong.

It's not up to them. The dealership has to hook up your car to the gestapo VAG network. If it is tuned, it will automatically get flagged with TD1.

What if you switch back to the stock program, will the dealership still be able to tell that it has been flashed?

seems to be a mixed bag online but all signs point to yes

there is a post by an vw master tech who transitioned to audi, he mentions that as soon as the scan tool is hooked up, the flag is thrown

If you flash back to stock (not just switch to the stock program) it shouldn't be detected, but that's not guaranteed. It seemed like VAG was just doing a check sum verification, but there were recent reports of cars being flagged even after flashing back to stock. Nobody knows for certain if there were other factors in play for those cases though.

If you're going to tune, you need to be prepared for the possibility that you'll get flagged TD1. Like @SQive said, the dealership doesn't control what gets sent to VAG once your car is hooked up for diagnostics.

    Yeah how come @Arin@APR LOL?!

I believe Sean said in another thread that they had to trash their original approach and start all over with program switching on this platform. No idea on ETA unfortunately.

Is this true for any vagcom change or just performance tunes?

Program switching is definitely not TD1 proof.
If TD1 is avoidable, it is only by flashing the entire ECU back to its original, stock program.

yup, read that as well. I wanted the capability to switch tune for 1. valet mode and 2. if there is an issue, would want to have the stock map to not make the issue worse

I understand the risks of TD1, still contemplating on which path to take.

has anyone seen issues with apr stage 1 tune for the q5? I see nightmare stories on the mk7 gti stage 1 tunes

Throwing a TD1 code shouldn't affect getting an inspection sticker correct?

Agreed 100%. I'm going from Stock (2016 Audi Q5 3.0L to Stage 2 GIAC this coming week with Induktion Motorsports. This was a big reason for going with GIAC (among other important ones as well such as awesome performance, awesome dealer-Ed@Induktion vs another local company, features standard in GIAC vs upgrades in APR (Program Switching for instance), cheaper then APR when I called recently).
