    2010 A5 2.0T - front left clunk

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
A few weeks ago started to hear a slight clonk from front left, getting more frequent now.
It can be generated by a pothole or other wise compression of the suspension. Guessing it occurs on the rebound.
Not possible to simulate on jacks or otherwise, so tough to say where exactly it is coming from.

On other cars with front struts, I have found similar noise when I did NOT torque the top strut not down all the way (requires a go-through socket and allen wrench).
    Car has around 150k miles.

Could a worn out top (rubber) strut mount cause the noise?
Other parts that are know for causing such klonk?
    Suggestions for troubleshooting?

Clunking noise when you go over bumps like speedbumps and in your case potholes usually points to bad ball joints. Jack the left side up and check the ball joints at the wheel knuckle, if you see any grease or torn boots then your ball joints are bad. Could also be your control arm bushings too, top and bottom.

I will check upper/lower (actually, not really sure how the A5 front suspension looks like, just assuming no different than B6 A4, C5 A6, etc) control arms and tie rod today.
Will also check (if possible) for any movement of the strut top (assuming top is visible under good) when loading/unloading the suspension (with jack).

Just to give you an idea at the moment what it looks like, this is an S5 but applies to the A5 as well.
