So blah blah blah hassle with a noisy power steering pump for what seems like my entire life. The Most recent S6 in my life had some power steering troubles upon arrival and I've been hassling with it for a while. A NEW power steering pump for a 4.2L isn't cheap at around $400. So I tried a used one (or two?). Bad luck with those, then got a rebuilt one from RockAuto / Cardone. Also, not totally silent. They're about $140 after the core charge and all.
But, being fairly stubborn and knowing there's not a damn reason a pump should whine at all I took a chance on this oddness:
92-99 Audi 100 A6 2.8L V6
$65 and it's brand new, not rebuilt. I basically went off the fact that going by the pics it looks identical.
Here's them side by side. If you measured you'd discover that the 2.8L pump is a hair over 1/8" smaller in the pump housing. Otherwise 100% identical.
So, why not?
I have installed it and so far it's a perfect fit. The rear mounting flange on the block has a little 'sleeve' in it and I tapped it forward 1/8" to take up the space left by the marginally smaller pump. Otherwise there's no difference, drives exactly the same.
Anyway, just to share with the V8 guys, if you're cheap here's an alternative.
