    P3 boost gauge install question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm doing the P3 boost gauge install this week. Just waiting on on it to arrive from ECS. I've done a ton of research and had one question. Does anyone know if the kit actually comes with enough hose to do the install or not?

If not, do you know what lengths I'll need, along with diameter, heat rating, and where to source it?

I bought the ECS boost tap and a small engine fuel filter from Home Depot to use as an oil trap, just not sure about the hoses.

Hopefully someone's done this and can point me in he right direction.

    Many thanks.

If you just bought the gauge from ECS then it doesn't come with the tubing.

If you would have looked on the P3 site you will see everything under accessories that you need. Boost tap, hose kit and you will need the boost sensor too.

Make sure to tape up your vent before you take it apart or it will explode everywhere and you will hate your life for 2 hours.

This is what I bought from ECS. It says it comes with hose, etc. just curious if anyone that has purchased it knows if it's enough.

I think I read some comments from you on another thread about that. Should I tape it up on the face of it before removing the trim panel?

Any input on how/when to tape it would be great to know.

I wasn't aware that kit was available, looks like you should have everything you need. That's a bare bones kit.

As far as taping it, use some scotch tape, get some small needle nose pliers. Tape the slats and those little metal pieces in place before you remove anything. Once you do that you will remove the slat that you need without anything else moving. You should be good to tape it after you remove the trim panel.

I taped mine as well, went to pull out the bottom slots and knocked the little silver piece that holds the top fins together loose.

Took me about 30 minutes to get it back in. I found holding the vent sidewise was the best way to line everything up.

Once that was back together smooth sailing.

Agree. I ended up making a jig for it out of styrofoam. That held it together so I could slide it all in place on its side, then taped it up.

The sad part is that It almost doesn't matter, it has near zero movement with the display installed.

Yeah I was taking my time and everything. I got it back together, but that is a really bad design. I was cursing for a good 45 minutes until I got the jig started.

Supposed to tape it first before you pull the trim. Nobody tells you this, and the instructions make it seem like that trim piece just pops out very easily.
Also for anyone reading this: Close your vent first so the slats or metal pieces don't fall in behind where you won't be able to get them.

I pulled my trim to wrap it and the vent exploded on me. I think it took about 2 hours to piece back together properly as well.

I had no issues with removing the trim before taping but I suppose it's good insurance to do so.

Its hit or miss. When you pull the trim, one of three things can happen:

    1) The trim piece comes off clean, leaving the vent attached to the car.

    2) The trim piece stays attached to the vent, pulling it off the car.

    3) The trim piece comes off, and the vent explodes and ruins the next few hours of your day.

I also had no issue getting the trim piece off.

Pulled the dash trim, wiggled the vent out, closed it and flipped it up. Removed the trim piece, taped the top half, went to remove the bottom half and knocked that damn clip loose.

Mine has a little tiny bit of movement, enough to adjust the AC to hit my face.

So installing the boost tap today, one of the 4 bolts on the manifold sheered off at exactly 7.5 ft lbs of torque. Yay. The other 3 seem to be holding it ok and it is an intake system. Boost gauge is showing 10-12 psi of boost so things are working. How concerned should I be in getting that thing tapped and removed?

A.) do it now before everything falls apart

B.) next time it's in for service?

FML. I was so careful about setting the torque and everything.

You can run into issues with that thing installed if you go to the dealer and your still under warranty. It depends on what your dealer thinks about it though. Have read a few stories about them not liking those and getting a TD1 because of them.

    That would be so lame.

Anyone know the part number or spec for that bolt? Hoping autozone has it. I bought a easy-out. Going to try and extract the nub.

BTW for those interested. After hours of googling and trying to figure out the OEM part numbers for the screws, I found this site.

    http://www.etka.me/Audi/USA/A4Q/2016/736/R/1/145/145020

    Great resource.

This schematic says a M6x20 bolt. This is incorrect. It's an M6x16. I had to cut and grind the the bolt down to fit. No big deal but the one they list will bottom out in the manifold and won't tighten.

Also, no one could find the code for the polished version of this bolt so one of my 4 is now just zinc coated and looks out of place. My wife has a leased Q7. I plan to simply swap one from hers at the end of the lease.

So I just finished installing the P3 into the vent and the little metal thing fell out of the top three louvers. How do I get that back in??

Also after putting it back in the car I cannot adjust the wheel at the bottom to control the amount of air coming through at all. It's just stuck in the open position.

    Thoughts?

You'll have to disassemble and reassemble to get that back in. It's roughly 12 days of work. Good luck.

The wheel will not open and close the vent fully because the display cable goes through the opening where the flap lives.

I'd be okay if the wheel didn't close all the way. But my wheel doesn't move at all.
I stuck the wire through the bottom left vent as per their instructions.
It was tight because of the head but once through had plenty of space.
Wonder if I should pick up another vent from a wreckers and experiment.
