    Steering problem after rack replacement.

Just changed the steering rack in my '96 with a rack I pulled from a '99 (guy said it was fine last he drove it). Everything went smoothly, flushed and bled the system thoroughly, everything sounds normal. However, it's steering hard as hell now. Honestly feels like I don't have power steering. The only noticeable difference between the racks was the lack of the dampener on the newer one, but I've heard that shouldn't be an issue. Any insight to this problem would be great. I was hoping to get an alignment tomorrow and be done with this, but it can't really be driven the way it is.

Didn't seem to have any problems with stiff steering prior to the replacement, except when the fluid was low. The rack used to leak pretty bad, thus the need for replacement. I'm thinking it's possibly the pump. I haven't checked the belt though.

Hard steering would indicate the pump is done, if the rack is confirmed good.

If you take the cap off the power steering res while running, is there any flow?

Just went out to check it, and there doesn't seem to be any kind of noticeable flow, the fluid seems relatively stagnant.

Is there any change when you get someone to turn the wheel while the car is running? If not, pump is dead.

Had someone turn the wheel at idle, no flow. If I rev it up to around 3k+, it starts to flow, and the steering gets a bit easier also.

Definitely replace the pump now. Something must have happened to it during the bleeding process.
