    Exclamation 2.0t Redtop Upgrade AEB

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alrite fellas, doing the redtop coil pack upgrade today. Got the harness ends off a 01 passat 1.8t, brand new coil packs off a 09 vw cc redtops!

The only question i have is since im running the Bosch f6DTC tri prong plugs, will see work better then a bkr7e gaped at .40? Cause obviously the heat is going to be intensified in the new redtops but i figured i ask...

Coils don't do anything for heat. Heat is dictated by the spark plug. You'll be fine

Huh, ok, cause i was reading the other diys and few of them were talking about how much better the coilpacks are as far as the actualy longevity and heat of the spark it produces now ovbiouslly the plugs is what controls that. I guess its misleading lol. Do you have a recent updated version of the diy? i found one very clean and simple now i can not for the life of me find it...

They were probably referring to dwell time and overheating the coils without informing your tuner of your coil upgrade.

So what would be the pros of doing this for performance then?

eliminates ICM, cheap replacement coils. possibly sparks hotter. haven't tested that myself to verify. Bosch > NGK

If a ignition coil dies you can replace it without any tools.

If you're AEB it's a good upgrade and would notice a difference. Not all red tops are the same though.

alrite thanks! attempting to do theese right now! great diy. I just wanted to ask one last question, does it sound like the oem coils are done. I can sit there any gear as long as its under 4kish and hit full boost almost but once the rpms goe up its starts stuttering and missing... sound like failing coils?

There is a kit on ecs tuning, 034 and a few other places to redo your coil pack harness, $70 shipped last I checked. Comes with crappy tool though, you want proper wire strippers and a "W" type crimper tool to do the job right.

As for your harness, the brown/yellow wire(4) is valve cover ground, multi-colored wires(3) are the signal wires for spark(must go to correct cylinder), Brown(2) is negative power and red/green(1) is positive power, all wires except the signal wires can connect wherever to the rest of your harness. If you have the patience you can pull the pins out of your connectors and do them yourself with new wire, but you might as well get the harness kit
