I know this first hand with a freeway exit/entrance that went in about 5 years ago in my city. Paying for data and using Google maps is NOT a workaround for an outdated database.
To update the database requires a trip to the dealership as only they have the ability to activate the particular map set. I haven't seen a thread anywhere on someone successfully getting the maps to activate.

I don't know about pre-FL, cause my pre-FL was without Audi Connect option, but on FL with Audi connect option databases updating regullary just online. Just notice about "map updates avaible" popping on the screen and you're forwarding to select what area maps you want to update.
To the topicstarter: Heh, on local market we have 3 options, base MMI radio without touch, nav etc, MMI 3G+ (MIB on FL) and MMI 3G+ (MIB) with Audi connect and google maps ) And yes, as it was noticed, you must visit dealer for database update if you haven't audi connect. However you should look for some non-official workshop who doing VAG service and updates, they can do it aswell. For example, maps update here in non-official workshop cost about 80-100eur.
