    MMI reverse camera

So, I've been looking at ads for S6 and S8, none of which will do my economic health any good at all, I'll try to resist.

One thing I did notice though, earlier models with the same MMI as my 2009 A6 seem to come equipped with rear reversing camera.

How complicated is it to add this to the A6?

A search shows this up pretty good.
You need the oem equipment, module, wiring, camera, some other stuff and then the ability to code it using software.

Last time I looked into it I was better off buying a wrecked a6 with the rearview camera and taking what I need then parting the rest of the car out. lol
I think it was over a grand.

I have done extensive research into this myself and, unfortunately, there is no aftermarket system for the MMI. Therefore, as @JPJ2007 stated, you would need to source all the OEM componenets for install.

Thanks JP and SIN and I apologise for not having used the search function, I tend to overlook that on my phone.

I certainly like the idea of having the rear camera but I think in terms of bang for buck it's probably a non starter.

I looked into doing this a while back through a custom electronics shop in the city, would have been done well and had multi angle camera that i could shift using a button inside that would be mounted separately but it would have cost between 1300-1800 depending on the camera i selected.

Yeah thats crazy. I really miss having the RearView Camera like my wife has but i'm not paying thousands for it. If I bought a car or the parts and then could recupe my costs by parting the rest of the vehicle out sure, but really I'm going to probably buy a newer audi next year and i'll just make sure it has the camera.

Another option, a bit pricey when it is available:

I added the Audi rear view camera to my 2010 A6, here's my write up:

Well worth it, having a backup camera. I have young kids so I really appreciate it. The install was moderate in difficulty, the hardest part was figuring out what I needed to buy and making sure it would work.

I just finished installing this. I ran into 3 problems. I have original rear sensors installed, they sent me a harness that is supposed to plug into the rear sensor module in the trunk and from there plug into the module. The pins on this harness did not seem to line up with the original canbus beige plug that goes into the sensor module. I modified the cable and tapped the canbus cables from behind the climate control unit. Another problem I ran into was the guidelines did not move when the steering wheel was turned. Also, I purchased the front camera to hook up, but, it didnt switch to it when I placed the car into drive. Seller said, it should switch for 10 seconds then return to MMI screen. It got cold and I ran out of daylight but I plan on resetting MMI and messing with Vagcom to see if I can change any settings to make it work. Aside from that, rear camera works when placed in reverse and rear sensors still work with lil car and sensors present on screen.
BTW, I have a MMI 3G+ (w/ HD) and original rear parking sensors.

    UPDATE:
1 more problem. the camera, trunk lid handle might not match the housing you have in your car. I'm pretty sure they're designed for the C7 based on hole placements for screws. I was able to modify mine to fit. I had to apply some hot glue on the metal clicker in the housing so that the handle can reach it when pushed from the outside. seems like it's about 4 mm short. I wish I took pictures to do a complete DIY but it was freezing and snowing when I was installing this on the streets of Brooklyn.

I still havent been able to figure out how to get the guidelines activated. Aside from that, I have a backup camera when shifted into R.

    UPDATE 2:
This video helped me a bit when I was modifying my harness. Not sure if the kit was purchased from carsgadget.com or not but the module looks similar to mine.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrBzTMEt3cY

    UPDATE 3:
So, Once the TPMS light went off after driving about 10 miles... the guidelines now work. The front camera does not engage for 10 seconds when placed in D as advertised by company.

Overall, impression... Camera is great quality, guidelines function. Install, is not difficult but may vary and require some slight modification to handle. There are several locations to access canbus, easiest for me was from plug in climatronic control.

There are several of these systems floating around ebay at half the cost. Not sure you'll get any costumer support or if the trunk handle has been tested and fits properly.

Hey I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this reverse camera? Anyone getting it to work with no issues?

    Thanks,
    Robert
