    Roof rack for small canoe or two person kayak

    I did a Google image search for a B6 with a canoe on a roof rack. Only one or two photos came up. It seems like everyone's mounting their snowboards which are light as hell. A canoe would weigh somewhere between 70 and 90 pounds. I'm looking at a smaller 10 or 14 foot canoe or kayak. Anyone got any advice on which roof rack would be suitable. Of all the things I know, I know nothing about roof racks other than the names of the brands.

    I have been using the Thule square bar for years on my VWs and now my B6. I use it for a full size canoe. Once I put a 40 foot extension ladder on my MKII Jetta rack. Got some weird looks. But it worked great.

    18'. Last rental canoe I could find for the long weekend. Vacuum molded Kevlar. Very impressive and light.

    I've got a two person kayak or a 14.5 foot canoe to bring on a 5000 Mile Road Trip. What do you guys think about that thing riding on the top of my 1.8 sedan?

    I drive my heavy ass canoe around all summer with mine. While 5000 miles is a big trip, with a quality rack and straps you should be fine. I sometimes hit the interstate with the canoe on top going up to 75 mph. Of course your gas mileage will suffer a bit with a canoe on top. Car still pulls and drives fairly normal with the mighty 1.8t plus canoe

    I wonder if it's really that bad? I can average about low thirties with cruise control on a road trip. With a canoe not sure what I'm looking at. Really the perfect road trip vehicle hands down is a diesel Sprinter or a diesel Transit. Those things are capable of 30 mpg.

    Dunno it really depends on aerodynamics. My car consumes up to 40% more gas with a loaded ski rack. It was a very shitty rack. A top box does not effect mileage that much.
