2000 A6 2.7t project "help me bring her back"

Hey all, this is my first post so please forgive any forum fouls on my part. As always constructive criticism is welcome.

I just bought my first audi, a 2000 A6 Quattro with the 2.7T and a 6spd manual. I know I'm going to need a lot of help from you guys turning it into the machine I want it to be. Its in decent shape for having almost 200K on the odometer, but if it gives you a hint on the previously owners abilities he was using a subway bag as a gas cap . Codes included P1129 and P1127 which I seemed to have fixed by cleaning the MAF. The rest of the codes I believe are all related to the O2 sensors which I'll replace ASAP. The mufflers have been removed and the stock exhaust is just dumping after the resonator. The covers for the timing assembly are gone, the only benefit to this is that I could see that the timing belt looked fairly new. Although I have no idea of the age on the idlers or water pump.

Current issues include some surging when accelerating usually around the 3k RPM range. Its light but I can feel it. Like its gaining 30 HP out of nowhere. Also there is a vibration around 60 MPH, I don't know if its a wheel out of balance or a bad shaft. There is also a bit of oil on the driver side of the engine "on hoses, turbo, exct" I'm hoping that its a valve cover gasket or something like that. Lastly I believe I have a short in the passenger side brake light circuit, when I depress brakes the light is dim and the front parking/turn signal flasher comes on solid. I have a parking light indicator on dash and a brake light warning. I want to get this Audi running properly and soundly before I get into performance work.

Any help you guys want to provide will be greatly appreciated. Where to start on repairs and ideas on where to start when it comes time for performance. Where should I focus my attention.

You have quit the project there but i would recommend starting from the heart, the motor. With that many miles I would do the timing belt service and while you're in there check everything else, gaskets, tensioners etc. Then you can get into the wiring and performance stuff. Take your time and double check everything. You want to get this right the first time coz it makes it more difficult, and expensive, if you have to redo anything. But you should be ok, there's plenty of helpful info.

Thanks Audi4.2! My plan was to purchase the full kit for timing service, ignition service "plugs, coils, modules" and valve cover set from EPS Tuning. Possibly the Full set of hoses too, but not all at once sadly... Thats a lot of cheddar! I'm also working on the vag-com, but I did pick up the all important Bentley Manual.

Check your oil cap. Seriously. It fixed issues for me, and I never thought it could have the effect it did. Check out this thread....the first 19 posts probably don't apply to you....you can skim thru those. Post 20 and 21 is what you need to see.
