    2008 4.2 timing chain

I am looking to purchase a 2008 Q7 S-line 4.2 with 80k miles. It has a rattle that is coming from the timing chain. I am having a hard time finding info on replacement costs or experience vs S4 4.2s. Does anyone know if this is the same motor used in the B6/7 S4s? I am trying to decide if it's worth pursuing or if I should just walk away. It has every option available that I know of and is the only one within 750 miles of me. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention, the rattle doesn't go away after cold start and seems to get a little quieter with rpms.

walk away as fast you can! if its the timing chain it would cost about $4500 or more! A friend of mine whos works as a tech for audi says a guy paid $8,000 for a full timing chain job.

I'm planning on negotiating the price of the repairs into the purchase price. Then I have a Q7 without worrying about future failures of it.

Decided to walk away from that 08 since it did need a new motor. From my research it didn't seem that common in the Q7 but it scared me away from the 4.2s. Purchased a '12 S-Line 3.0T today, having it shipped 1,600 miles from TX to ND. 5th Audi we've had!

You negotiate that price down as low as you can. Rattle with the chains is a bad bad thing my friend. I had a 3.6 that had the same thing. It won't just be the timing chain. It will be the guides and it very well could involve oil pressure issues. My 3.6 ended up losing oil pressure, throwing a chain and destryoing itself. I rebuilt the engine but it was never back to as good as it was new. Do yourself a favor, get it cheap, drive the shit out of it, put a nice motor with <50k on it, treat it right, and you will be buried in it.
Just remember, it could always be a hell of a lot worse...

I'll take the 3.0T over the 3.6 or 4.2 any day. 😊 I'm glad I didn't mess with it. The face lifted 2012 is a lot nicer in my eyes too. We got it delivered a few weeks ago and it's even better than I expected.
