    Clutch issues

Car is a 1.8t b6 a4 5 speed. I was shifting from second to third when I full on lost the ability to shift, the car wouldn't go into gear and the clutch pedal got really squishy. I towed it home and was fucking around putting it into gear while the car was off, which it does fine. My brake fluid levels are fine and I haven't had any issues with the clutch before this, no slippage or grinding at all and the engagement height on the clutch felt normal. Any ideas what is going on here?

Sounds like maybe the clutch slave failed?

i had the same issue as you before car wouldnt go into gear when the engine was on but would go into gear when off. i thou it was the slave or master cylinder which i swap out for new ones. that didnt solve the issue, which was left with on thing the clutch has failed. My clutch disk and pressure plate was stuck together and finished.

I bet the pressure plate failed. or some bolts on the pressure plate backed out and the clutch is no longer able to disengage.

So I'm in the middle of replacing the slave cylinder (which I'm not even sure is the issue), and I've hit a snag. When I attempt to install the new slave, I find that I cannot seat it far enough into the hole that it rides in to get the bolt that holds it in place to line up for the install. Furthermore, the clutch fork (or what I assume is the clutch fork that the push rod touches) doesn't seem to line up with the hole that the slave sits in; there's a gap at the top of that hole. If anyone can tell me what's up, that'd be awesome

You can push the slave cylinder back into position by using a phillips head screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver through the slave cylinder bracket where the bolt goes. Put the tip of the screwdriver into the threaded hole in the transmission. Leverage the screwdriver toward the front of the car until you get the slave into position where you can push it into the seat. You can then remove the screwdriver and insert the bolt.

Unfortunately clutch issues are rarely because of a bad slave cylinder. If the seals in the slave cylinder go bad the hydraulic fluid will leak out of the end of the cylinder. If you didn't notice any fluid leaking out of the slave cylinder or a drop in the brake fluid reservoir the slave isn't going to be your problem.
