    extremely bad misfires

2000 vw passat 1.8t ATW Engine code. Car had an occasional misfire on cylinder 2. Car blew a head gasket, and we replaced the cylinder head with an AWM. We swapped the cam gear so that it would match the crank gear since it is an 058 block, and the AWM is a 06A block, but we noticed the timing notches on the two different cam gears are about 2 teeth different. Upon starting the car for the first time after the cylinder head swap, it idles fine, but when you raise the RPMs up to 2500 it begins misfiring extremely bad and knocking. The codes that come up are always Random multiple cylinder misfire, and either misfire for cylinder 1 or cylinder 2.

We tested all the coil packs and all have came up good. We then tested the injectors, and once again all tested out well. We then checked the fuel pump, and fuel pump relay, to no avail. We have also noticed that even with the car off and key out of the ignition we have power at the coil packs sometimes, an other times there is no power.

I also have found that sometimes when you shut the car off and pull the key out of the ignition, the car still continues to run until you hit the brake pedal. This has been happening before we did the cylinder head swap. It also sometimes leaves all the dash lights on until you hit the break pedal, even when the motor isnt running or the key in the ignition.

I know its not an audi, but any help would be great appreciated.

I'm no expert, but since you had electrical issues before the head swap and you have them now too, I'd look there first - that is any short, broken ground etc. Sounds like your symptoms indicate that the accessory and/or ignition circuit is not dis-engaging when it should (key in OFF position or out).
I have no idea whether that would cause significant misfires and only in high RPMs, but if the ignition/key circuit is flaky I think it would be possible for the engine to behave like you are turning the key off in high RPM when the electrical load increases.

Note: I have 0 experience with this and you seem to have far more experience having swapped heads etc. I'm just guessing at logical places I'd check.

is there any way to time the cams in with a dowel indicator? rather than the timing marks?

Did you change the valve cover with it I believe the timing marks are slightly different between the 058 and 06a, you could be a tooth off or so.

we went back to an awm pulley because the timing marks are 2 teeth off so we were running retarded, so once we advanced it it runs like a champ now! thanks alot for all the input!
