    What is a Drag Race?
In basic terms, a drag race is an acceleration contest from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance at a specifically designed drag race facility. These contests are started by means of an electronic device commonly called a Tree or Christmas Tree. Upon leaving the starting line, each contestant activates a timer that is, in turn, stopped when the same vehicle reaches the finish line. The start-to-finish clocking is the vehicle's elapsed time or E.T., which serves to measure performance and often serves to determine handicaps during competition.

    What is Bracket Racing?
By far the most popular form of drag racing is a handicapped form of competition known as E.T. bracket racing. In this form of racing, two vehicles of varying performance potentials can race on a potentially even basis. The anticipated elapsed times – often called the “dial-in” – for each vehicle are compared, and the slower car receives a head start equal to the difference of the two. With this system, virtually any two vehicles can be paired in a competitive drag race.

For Example: Car A has been timed at 17.78, 17.74, and 17.76 seconds on the quarter-mile, and the driver feels that a dial-in of 17.75 is appropriate. Meanwhile, the driver of car B has recorded elapsed times of 15.27, 15.22, and 15.26 on the same track and has opted for a dial-in of 15.25. Accordingly, car A will get a 2.5-second head start against car B when the tree counts down to each car's starting green lights.

If both vehicles cover the quarter-mile in exactly the predetermined elapsed time, the win will go to the driver who reacts quickest to the starting signal. The reaction to the starting signal is called “reaction time.” Both lanes are timed independently of one another and the clock does not start until the vehicle actually moves. Because of this, a vehicle may sometimes appear to have a mathematical advantage in comparative elapsed times but actually lose the race. This fact makes starting-line reflexes extremely important in drag racing!

    What is a "Breakout" and/or "Red-lighting"?
Should a racer go quicker than his or her predetermined dial-in, it is a breakout and grounds for disqualification. If both racers make runs under their dial-ins, the win goes to the racer who breaks out the least. Another form of disqualification is a foul start, or red light. This happens when the racer reacts to the tree too quickly and leaves the starting line before the green go signal. When dual infractions occur (for example, a red-light and then a breakout), the red-light takes precedence over the breakout.

    Staging:
On the starting line, there will be two laser or light beams on either side of the starting area. At Sacramento Raceway, these are housed in a box on either side of the starting line. As a vehicle approaches the starting line, it breaks the first light beam, and the pre-stage light on the tree is lit. The racer slowly inches the car forward until the second light beam is broken and the stage lights come on. After both cars are staged, the starter activates the tree, and three amber lights and one green are sequenced. Racers use amber lights as a guide to anticipate the green bulb coming on. If they leave too soon, a bright red foul light will show.

    Where to go?
    5305 Excelsior Road
    Sacramento, CA 95827

    When?
    Gates Open at 4:00pm
Racing starts at 5:00pm and generally goes to 9:30pm

    What to do?
Upon arriving at Sacramento Raceway, you are going to enter at the north most driveway (you will pass the first driveway and a sign for the raceway before seeing the northern driveway). Proceed to the entrance gate where you’ll pay the admission fees ($15 for racing, $7 for spectating) and get your tech card if you’re racing.

If you are spectating, you will proceed directly to the JHM Audi Night parking area, which is located in the very front, just to the left of the grand stands. It will be easily spotted, as the area will be coned off for Audi’s only! To get there, you will make a left u-turn after proceeding through the admission gate and you will head towards the right side of the staging lanes.

If you are racing you will continue through the gate after paying your admission fee. Upon entering the gate, Make a left u-turn to continue towards the drag strip to lane ONE (left hand side) where your car will be “teched” (When pulling up to the admission booth, you will see the staging lanes on your left hand side).

Before racing, your vehicle will need to go through a brief technical inspection or “tech”. Fill out the form given to you at the admission gate and pull as far as you can to the front of lane ONE. Make sure your hood is popped. A Sacramento Raceway employee will come to you and make sure that your paperwork is filled out correctly. This employee will also issue you a number on your windows (ie: 8418) and that is the number that will be displayed on your time slips. This is your number for the entire night. After your car is teched, you will be directed to either the left lane or the right lane of the dragstrip to make your first pass. Follow the Sacramento Raceway Employee’s instructions and proceed to the starting line to make your first pass. At the end of the track there will be THREE exits on the right hand side, choose your exit based on how fast you can slow down, most cars will use the second exit. NOTE: Right lane racers will exit first.

From there you will drive until you loop around (all three exits will get you to the same slip booth, so look out for other racers when merging onto the main road) to the slip booth where you will be handed your time slip (white slip indicates that you won, a yellow means you lost). At this point you will continue driving behind the grand stands (stay to the left and go around the fence) and towards the front entrance where you will find the staging lanes.

At the beginning of the night during the dial-in runs, you can choose to get in the JHM Audi Night Lane (lane EIGHT) or choose to park your car in our designated parking area in the front. You will continue to race in lane EIGHT against other Audis until you lose the bracket race. Like mentioned previously, a white slip indicates that you won and a yellow slip indicate that you lost. If you received a yellow time slip, you can choose to race anyone in the fun drags lanes 1 and 2 or park your car and hang out in the Audi Area.

    When the brackets start:
From 4:00PM until 7:00PM you are going to be doing practice runs against other Audis in the Audi lane (lane EIGHT). This is the time where you will be gauging what your official dial in will be based on the times you see during this practice period. (See the example above for choosing your dial in). Pick the time you feel will be best for your car and when the Sacramento Employee comes around, give him that time so he can write it on your window.
Once the bracket racing officially starts (after 7:00PM) you will want to run as close as possible to your dial time. If you lose during this period (yellow slip) you will precede to lanes 1 and 2 if you want to keep racing for fun. If you win (white slip) you will want to get back into lane EIGHT for your chance at winning the trophy.

If you have any further questions, please let us know and we will be able to help you!

I'll be there for sure!! Weather should be perfect that time of year for some record setting passes as long as they prep the track decently (which they never do for wed nights)...maybe you guys should ask nicely for them to prep it since jhm is spending some cash on renting two lanes.
