    Possibly moving to Cali

Whats up Cali Audi friends. I might be moving out to Comifornia and I am trying to figure out what I need to do with my car to get it to pass inspection. I am midway through my EFR install. Its a PAGparts EFR build which is in a stock location. I will be running a highflow CAT which is a really expensive quality one which can pass an emissions test. I plan to weld the stock CAT heat shields on it to make it look stock. So hopefully that will help with visual. I am also running a stock airbox with a 034 TIP. Its a silicon hose, will they give me grief for that?

Things I worry would not pass visual. Will my IE intake manifold pass or do I need a stock intake manifold?

I have a FMIC, will that pass?

currently have a UNI630 tune with my SIA coded out. Plan to shift to 1000cc injectors and Maestro. Will these pass the OBD2 out there?

I have no bypass valve anymore because it is onboard on my EFR. So I have that hole plugged in my 034 TIP.

I have an AEB head on my AWM. So I have no SIA setup anymore. Do I need to put that back on to pass visual. Will the AEB head give me problems?

For the EFR setup I am going to make a heatshield to try to cover my PPG manifold. I hope that helps fool them.

I also figure I need to get a stock engine cover again and the Passat Engine covers on the side to make it look as stock as possible.

    Sooo thoughts?

Legally, you probably won't pass any SMOG inspection (fail during the visual inspection). However, if all your monitors set and you find a shop that is willing to ignore visuals, you'll pass.

You may have to travel a bit, but there are shops that will let you pass without changing anything.

Ya but even that might be iffy for a visual if they are a doucher smog guy. That's what I'm running and I wouldn't try to do a legal one just because the flagging and or fail on record. I'm similar no cat, sai or any of that stuff. But will be doing possibly the same pag kit as urs.

Ur cat is really only good if its a 50state one by the way and most aftermarket are 49state with cali being the exception.

Ill text a friend that moved here with a built 1.8t and see what he had to do to get his cali plated. He ran Hawaii plated for a year. He's 3071 pag wheel mk1 gli

They don't do the sniffer test for 2000+ model years, only OBDII. So it doesn't matter how good/expensive your cat is... if it lacks the official numbers seen on a stock cat, then it technically should fail visual... you should have much better luck with welding the stock cat body over your HFC.

    Things you may fail for:
FMIC (technically not illegal, but many shops will consider it an intake tract modification)
    Cone filter (intake tract modification)
No SAI system: their paperwork will show your car should have it, so if they can't locate it...
Coded out systems: if it's "just" coded out, it will fail. It needs to have the readiness trick put in, otherwise the OBDII machine will catch this, and call your ECU "tampered".

The more stock you make things look, the better your chances.
I passed with SAI components in-place but not connected/functional, because my Motoza tune has the proper trick for coding out SAI.
I put the stock SMIC back in but still run my FrankenTurbo kit.
Also running the stock air box normally, just with a 3" MAF. This means I also have the stock cover over the air box.

Ok so plans. I can bolt on the SAI system. Make it look stock that way. I am contemplating buying a F21 mixed flow just for smog reasons. What I am wondering is will they give me a problem with the Silicon hoses. How anal is the Cali visuals? I know for my EFR setup that my CAT will look like this.

For my EFR, I am actually going to be running the stock airbox. The 034 TIP lines up perfectly with the EFR and the stock airbox. The problem is the manifold does not look stock. I can grind off the PPG name and then cover the whole thing in some manifold heatshield from some junkyard car. Perhaps that will help.

I have no clue how my UNI 630 tune has the SAI coded out. Is there a way for me to look at that using the Rosstech Vagcom?

You can attempt to use VCDS to check if SAI readiness is properly coded out... basically you reset readiness, and see how quickly the SAI field says READY. If it's within seconds, then that's going to be flagged. If it takes a little while and/or multiple start cycles, then that should pass inspection.

Here's another little bit of info for you: I recently bought a B6 1.8TQM with APR Stage 3+. In CA to sell a car / transfer title the seller must pass SMOG. Well, the previous owner of my car passed with the APR Stage 3+ kit......... manifold says APR pretty big on it, and it's a HFC. I asked him about it, and he didn't pay off anyone; seems to me the people at the testing place were just dumb.

How hard is it to do all this is Meistro? Should I just get a Motenza tune for a Franken Turbo and then just pay him extra to make another tune file for my EFR with 1K injectors. I wonder if he would be willing to do that?

Maestro is easy to delete all that stuff, you just uncheck the boxes in the program.

However, I have no clue what unchecking the boxes means. i highly doubt it is sufficient to pass inspection unless it is just visual. I always said if I lived in Cali, I'd just have a stock setup for this very reason.

Check the county that you are moving to. Some do not require a smog. With california its all about visual. If it looks stock and the important pieces are all there then as long as the ecu shows all the readiness codes are good you are golden .

These counties do not require smog check.
