Question on Rotors and DIY for 2014 Q5

So I have a 2014 Q5 2.0T and took it in today for state inspection. My brakes are at 4mm and they recommended front pads and rotors with flush for over $1000. I just hit 42,000+ miles on the car. Is it common to have to change the rotors with the pads. I'd figure maybe for your second brake change but they said it's because everything is soft. I have an idea of what brand to use for pads and rotors but curious of what you guys/gals been using and if you like? Next, has anyone came across a brake rotor/pad/brake flush DIY thread for the Q5? If so, can you please share the link? Thanks for you time.
