    01E 6 speed transmission help?

    Hi Guys,

Wanted some opinions on a recent issue I've been experiencing with my transmission. Vehicle is a 2001.5 B5 S4 6 speed manual.

Over the weekend I had an incident where I was unable to get the shifter into 3rd on a high rpm 2nd to 3rd up shift. I don't usually drive this car hard at all, but found it strange that it missed the gate that easily. (I'm not a newb by any means to driving manual as all my cars are manual and built in one way or another) so when I then rev matched as the rpm'S dipped from me holding in the clutch and got the car in 3rd no problem. My issue arised when I coasted to a stop and noticed I had no 2nd gear period. Shifter could not go in that gate and I wasn't going to force it. I also noticed I had no 1st gear or reverse. So I had to use 3rd gear from a stop, which I was no fan of. After letting the car sit for about an hour I went to check it out and I got 1st and reverse back but still no 2nd gear.

I can adjust the shift knob (left and right) and get 2nd gear back, but I lose reverse in the process and 2nd gear is really stiff. If the car is on a slant or incline 2nd gear is easy to get into?

Just wanted to gather some opinions on this situation before I go and possible swap out the transmission and or rebuild it.

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Travis

1-2 shift collar bit you in the ass. I had the same thing happen to me on a 4-3 downshift. Missed the gate for 3 and went in between 1-3 where it grinded. Got it back into 3 fine, but 1 was noticeably harder to get into, and I could not get into second.

After 2 weeks slowly working it, I could get 2nd like before. Good luck trying to free it up

Like above time for a rebuild. I just went through the exact same thing. Drove my car home on 3rd-6th gear it was a pain. Good times.

    Thanks for the input guys!

I'll look into the rebuild kit. It's gotten a little worse now actually, even hard just to move the shifter in nuetral left and right, almost like it's stuck on something?

That's how mine was when my 1-2 gears locked up. And my side to side shifter movement binds up as well.
