Ah, the long awaited build thread is finally here.

Most of you remember me from the old Ibis APR Stage III K04 Q5.
And some may know or not know it blew up a little over a year ago now.

I had wanted to upgrade to an SQ5, but was planning on custom ordering a Nardo Gray with Black/Magma Red. (What I will get next in whatever model that becomes, I assure you!)
But the timing of blowing the engine on the way to the airport of a weeklong business trip, and trying to sort out finding a new vehicle over the phone was pretty daunting.

There was no time to custom order, so I was left with trying to find a SQ5 to my liking already on the lots stateside somewhere. Sepang Blue was up on my list as well (I've had red, black, white & silver cars, but never a blue one).
I wanted red interior, but that wasn't an option out there (plus my wife said red inside of blue, no way!)

So after having my Ibis Q5 towed to my local dealer, I had him search, and he found 2 Sepang SQ5's on lots east of the Mississippi. Both identical, but one with carbon Atlas and one with The black/silver layered inserts. I insisted on the carbon. He worked out a dealer trade for me and sent for it. And once it was in, I took delivery of my new 2015 SQ5 last June.

So, I didn't go crazy with mods at first. I had an infant son (my first) born that August (2015), so my main mods were baby car seat, and securing winter rims and tires so the car would be as safe as possible.

Sourced some OEM 20" titanium peelers with Blizzak's on them from a fellow Q5er on AW.

And they arrived in the mail in perfect condition. Thanks again @coltranes (Alan).

So fast forward about 8 months and spring has sprung. I have the SQ5 in for service, and my wife is perusing the lot while I drop off with the Service Mgr.

Long story short, she had traded in (months ago) her Tornado Red GLI fully loaded (which she loved), for a Kia Sorento because we thought we'd need the extra room. She hated it from the get go. And had been missing her GLI.

She spied a Q3 in the lot, and as she came in the showroom there was a prestige model sitting there in Hanian Blue.
It has the exact same chassis, and engine as the GLI did, but with a little more room. And we had found over the course of many months that we didn't need the room in the Sorento.

So we bought her a Q3 that day as well.

So now the mod bug began to bite. I was looking at Europlates, and ask my wife if she'd like one too. She said she loved it on my old car, so I ordered 2. She's full on Irish, so I let her choose what she wanted and mounted it for her.

I have German from both sides of my family in me. And my surname many-great grandfathers ago was actually born and lived in a village somewhere in Southern Germany/Bavaria. He migrated into the US, going through England during the revolutionary war. He was recruited to fight for the crown, and defected to fight for the continental army once he arrived here. My Dad traced this back as far as he could to Germany, and the records at that point were either lost or too hard to understand.

Regardless, it's not like I wasn't getting an Ingolstat plate.

As an aside here, on my mom's side of the family, 2 brothers immigrated from Germany (my great-great grandad and his brother), and went through Ellis Island. And one got to keep the original German spelling of his name, and the other (my grandad) got one letter swapped. Both are buried side-by-side with different last names, back in my hometown.











As you can see in the above pic, I ordered the 3.0T dipstick as well.

Before too much more modding, I also got my son a future R8.
I haven't put it together yet, because he's still too young, but got it on a good sale. I've been eyeing it since I knew we were having him.



This thing has working headlights and a AM/FM stereo in it.

Not only did I get the 3.0T dipstick when I started my ordering spree, but I got some upgrades for the engine bay as well.

ECS does custom Carbon Fiber overlay for the 3.0T. And it turned out great.
Added the R8 oil cap (kept it from the old Q5... The only piece that transferred over).

One of these days they'll end up being more CF in there when a Stage II and intake finally happen, but for now, I'm keeping the drivetrain warranty in tact.

Now as I'm waiting for my plethora-o-parts, I took some time to do some Vag-Com mods with the Ross-Tech cable.

Here's a run down of my changes to the SQ5. The Tail lights I set up to mimic the Euro spec ones, without buying & installing the Ecodes just to get the Amber strip. The only difference is the strip is red, where the euro blinker strip is amber. This works fine for me.
The fronts, Drop the side marker light function for my ECode headlamps (so no code is thrown), and set DRLs to reduce intensity rather than turn off (wink) completely when initiating front turn signal indicators.

Here's the VCDS code mods I did:

Enable Independent Fogs control with high beams

Bit 1 – (Front) Uncheck the box or change :Bit 1 to 0
Bit 2 – (Rear) Uncheck the box or change :Bit 2 to 0

When signalling, the DRLs will dim to the level set in adaptation channel 3.
This is also the brightness level the DRLs assume when the headlights are on.

So I had initially got a set of KW HAS, but after careful consideration, and much help from @Mops & @S-Fore, I sent those back and pulled the trigger on these beauties. Ordered from Mops and I have to say that he is the man. Send your business his way if at all possible. Very helpful and was able to source what I needed. Ordered a set of gloss black center star bolt covers to go with.

Couldn't be happier with the setup. There are a lot of aftermarket options out there that are beautiful, but as stock goes, so happy with these.

Tips (VHT: Primer, Satin Black, Satin Clear)





Calipers. G2 Yellow. We'll see how they look when I get the Gloss Black wheels over them. I was afraid the black calipers would get lost under the gloss black wheels. I considered Silver and Blue also. When it's time for a rotor change if the car is still going strong, I will probably upgrade to the Brembo BBK, more than likely. Especially if I ever end up going Stage 2. If I still like the yellow at that point I'll prob stick with the yellow Brembo GT Kit. ECS makes a 2-piece floating rear that sort of matches it. So I'll go that route once it's time to change. But for now ...

Where did you source those gloss black center bolt covers? I'm looking at powdercoating my stock wheels also.

I found them as a set of 4 on Amazon. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was an OEM part when it arrived.

Do not mix until you are 100% prepped and ready to go. That stuff, in theory, gives you one hour of working time. I've seen it turn to cement in about 45 minutes. That's plenty if you're prepped, but it's kind of a pricey lesson if not. FWIW, I used 0000 steel wool and a 25% IPA solution (that'd be the rubbing alcohol, not the India Pale Ale...you'll use that afterward) for prep. Results were fantastic, and the calipers still had gloss when I sold the vehicle four years later. That said.... if you already have a relationship with your powdercoater...those results are simply stunning. And a final FWIW, the Duplicolor kit costs about half as much, offers significantly more working time, and is quite durable.

Last thing I'm waiting on is my custom ordered Carbon Fiber Mirrors from OCarbon. I'm having him keep the rain channels in the OEM pieces, so it matches the rest of the mirror. It's taking him a bit more time to fabricate. As soon as it arrives, I'm taking her
in for the final (haha, yeah right) install.

I had my shop do the calipers and tips, but they turned out better than I could have hoped. I was going to have the tips powder coated, but alas, I don't see a way to get them off the car. They are different than the 2.0 push on tips.

He prepped with steel wool I believe, and you run the car in a cycle of idle, off, idle, off, drive, to set the paint.

The satin black looks nice on them for sure and it was a cheap mod with 3 cans of paint from Amazon.

We've got some sweet twisty mountain roads here that are a fun drive, about an hour from me. I'm in the metro valley here.

US Route 60 (Midland Trail) from Gauley Bridge (Kanawha Falls), through Hawk's Nest, and up to Fayetteville (New River Gorge), is stunning and fun drive, especially in the fall with the leaves changing.

Plenty of fun mountain roadways in the eastern mountains in fall though.

I actually got close to your neighborhood once. I took the interstate 68-79-64 run from NW Maryland into Kentucky. That was 23 years ago, and the amazingly beautiful scenery is vivid in my mind. Americana....never ceases to amaze. You live in a gorgeous area of the country, my man!

It's got to be on California's naughty list somewhere. I've encountered the same with 3M adhesive remover (the detailer's secret!) although there are some sellers still willing to throw a few cans in a box. It gives me an excuse to visit an auto paint store I haven't been to in ages, so no harm-no foul.

We'll all see it together if my mirror caps ever get done.

My left mirror rattles when it closes/opens, and the mirror shutters a bit while driving.
My tech noticed it too before I even mentioned it to him.
Told him I was swapping mirror covers anyway, so I'd let him dissect the problem when he has them pulled apart and he's got the car for a few days.

As soon as I have a ship date and tracking number for them I'll have my visit scheduled to install everything.

I saw a Nardo Gray SQ5 in Teays Valley about a year ago, and it looked fantastic. Never seen it again.
I wanted that set up so badly.

I wanted the install done weeks ago.
I may just go ahead with it.
I'm waiting on my mirror caps but I'm pretty pissed about that.
I can't even get Matt at OCarbon to return my emails or calls.
He told me 2 weeks ago they were getting final clear coat and polish. Haven't heard from him since.

I was trying to get everything installed at once.

Hopefully that will be here soon. If not I may have to pursue legal action on him.
I didn't know he had a bad history until after I paid him.

I've seen two black SQ5's and a gray with a bike rack on the hitch receiver.
I use my Chase card for all of my online purchases. I've had to dispute a few charges for similar reasons. I need to make an appointment for an alignment at Bert Wolfe. It was fine until my wife drove it last week. I think she swerves to hit every pothole she sees.

Matt finally got back to me. They have been moving the shop to a new location, and he has some chemical permit issues to sort out before final clear coating can be done. But I should have things by early next week.
Even offered to do any small accent bits at no charge for the trouble.

So hopefully all will work out there.

I know he does quality work. Lots of people have great products from him.
I don't think he's super organized though. But it's a small 3 man shop.

We'll see how things go.

So after a trial run with the yellow painted calipers to see if I liked them, the verdict day-by-day as I look at them, is I'm not in love.
My wife actually looked at me today and said, I hated the yellow before, and it's worse now that they're dirty. Make them Red.

So I did. Go big or go home I guess.

Just ordered the brake upgrade to OEM Tornado Red option with SQ5 trim inserts.

I'm also going to upgrade to the Stop-Tech Rear Cross- Drilled high-carbon Rotors with black hubs (330x22) to go with them, as well as Stainless Steel Braided lines and Stop-Tech pads.


I'm going cross-drilled on the rear because I'm pulling the trigger with Mops on the Brembo GT (380x32) BBK Cross-Drilled front brake setup in RED. Will be much happier with that choice.


Also pulling the trigger on a set of ECodes courtesy of AG.
Looked heavily into what it would take to upgrade to Adaptive, but decided to go with standard headlamps that plug & play into the P+.


Will update when all arrives.

After install, I'll be putting my front OEM SQ5 calipers up for sale, if any of you Q5 guys want to upgrade to an OEM BBK on the cheap. Shoot me a PM if interested. It's a big jump up from the 2.0T calipers.

When I was in for my H&R/Bilstein install, the shop had a Q5 TDI with the Brembo GT front brakes. It looked fantastic, and they were very pleased with the performance. FWIW, they have another SQ5 customer who is mirroring your suspension setup as well - seems to be an awesome solution.

Since my CF mirrors weren't fulfilled by a different vendor, I am getting my $ back there.

I have now ordered from Carbon Designz (BKS Tuning GmbH) a set of custom Mirror caps with the rain channels kept in them, as well as a set of 4 door handles with the Adv key functionally.

Happy to finally have my correct carbon items in process after 2 months of waiting with a different vendor that didn't work out.




I ended up doing both in 245 Carbon and those accents along with all the other gloss black front/rear of the car will complete the look.

I don't like too much carbon, but proper accents are money. Literally and figuratively.
