Audi A4 1.8T B5 motor issue (need some help)

    Hi guys,

I just bought this car 1 week and the car is in great condition but the engine is not doing so well.

The idle is really rough when i start it but after a couple of seconds it gets better, as soon as I push on the gas pedal, the car dies!

    I got the obd2 plugged in and I had 3 codes :
    Camshaft position sensor
    Mass of air volume
    Random missfire.

So i installed a new gas filter, new camshaft position sensor and also did the timing belt ( the timing was off a little by the way ) could it be because the timing got off too much and broke something inside?

Sometimes i can get the car to rev pretty good but sometimes not?

Now that I changed those parts i am still reading the same code???

    Thanks for the help guys
    It is really appreciated!

Sounds like you might have fixed one of the problems (cam pos sensor), but not necessarily the random misfire and MAF sensor.
Swapping to a new MAF is not a lot of work - and its not a big ticket item (RockAuto shows the MAF sensor for 1.8t as $75-$100) - but I'm not sure what car you have, and the Audi I have (2000 A4 with 1.8t) has the MAF sensor built into the air box.
But before that, since you believe you have fixed the cam pos sensor - clear all the codes and try it again.

If there are still problems, the codes will come back - without, the cam pos sensor code. Good luck.

I worked on the car today, I tried to clean the Maf sensor and temp sensor. After I did it the car would not start anymore. I unplugged the maf and it started? Its running but not really well. I've ordered a new maf i will try it tuesday. No more random missfire code, only cam position and maf. Could the cam position code come from the engine running like crap? Thanks

Not sure if the cam pos sensor code would be caused by poorly running engine or not.
When my 1.8t had that code (the cam pos sensor code) - a new sensor cleared it right up.

    As for the MAF...
It should be located somewhere in flow of air AFTER the air filter and BEFORE your intake manifold.
Because it's AFTER the air filter - I'd expect that it stays clean. Unless, of course, you have a dirty air filter (bad) or no air filter at all (worse).
I've heard that some guys are removing the air filter altogether - in an effort to get better air flow into the intake manifold.
But a much better way of doing that is to buy a high-flow air filter (can you say K&N).

Anyhow, depending on what you cleaned your MAF with - it might have made things worse.
Either way, you have a new MAF on order. So keep us posted - would like to know if it fixes your problem.
