    Rear diff drain plug leaking

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've developed a slow leak from my rear diff drain plug over the years. I re torqued it a few times but it continues to drip. I was planning on removing it then cleaning everything, then sealing it with lots of RTV. There is no need to replace the plug itself im assuming?

They're like $5 from the dealer. I don't see why you wouldn't replace it for that low price

^^This and check the threads in the case.
You may have threaded the plug to deep.
It happens all the time on rear ends.

I think you are supposed to replace it if you remove it. That's what I have read online.

You can also use a crush washer under the plug.

Teflon, crush washer, new plug, and lots of rtv. That'll fix it.... Just kidding. I'd personally use replace it and use a crush washer.

Thank you all, I didn't even know there was an option of using a crush washer on there. I teflon taped the new plug, added a washer and used RTV and its sealed up fine! Prost

So the diff leak ended up not being the drain plug. Im pretty sure it is coming from the larger outer face of the diff housing, not the axle seal. Is there a gasket for this portion, could not find one?

Connecting the prop-shaft to the diff snout? There is a seal in there, but to do it you gotta remove the diff from the car

If its the diff pinion seal i would live with it, that seal is generally not easily re&re'd on a ZF diff

Seems to be coming from where the larger outer face mates to the case, on the bottom of course .

the diff side cover is probably sealed with an anerobic sealer like loctite 515 or similar. You sure its not an axle seal leaking and the fluid is blowing around under the car?
