    B8 S4 vs. Jaguar XE R-Sport

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just test drove the new Jaguar XE R-Sport in v6 with 340 hp supercharged engine and I would have to say it was quick. It felt quicker than my S4 and the power was instant. I like the gear ratio better in the Jag but interior has nothing to desire for. And engine note sucks in the Jag. Surprised consider the F-Type's exhaust is awesome.

Has anyone driven the XE to compare?

Someone else just made this move on these forums. He posted info up. I built one online just for the heck of it and it's pretty impressive for the cost.

No idea what the aftermarket community is like for jags though.

I test drove one a week ago. It was pretty impressive and fun to drive but it's not faster. If anything it's a touch slower. Handling was impressive, but I'm not sure I like the interior more than the S4. It's a new model and a jaguar so I'm a little afraid of reliability of the early models.

We drove the XE in Dallas at an Autocross track jaguar set up when they launched it. It was quick, but felt a little loose at speed, didn't have a lot of confidence in the steering.

Also, mfr ratings show 0-60 times as 4.9 and 5.1 for the S4 and XE respectively. So on paper it's not as quick and we know Audi is for sure conservative, I'm sure jaguar is too but by how much?

And I actually thought stock for stock the XE had a better sound than the S4 on the outside (no electronical sound piping inside).

    Agreed on the interior.

Here's a video on the track just at the start. I'm filming it from a good distance away while my wife and the instructor took a spin through.

Oh and just so you know that I'm not biased, we own the new F Pace SUV in the S trim. So it's a 50/50 opinion. :)

I really like the body style of the jag xe-r, it seems like a bigger body b8 to me and I love that they supercharged. Other than that surface level vanity, i know nothing aout the xe-r.

It also frustrates me that they didn't put the 380hp in it, not that it's a noticeable difference.

I guess the only way is to put the S4 and XE on a track to find out.

I felt the down shift for more power seems to happen quicker than the DSG in the S4.

I believe the XE uses the ZF 8 speed which is a very quick transmission now.

Jag interiors have not been great the last decade (or more). They make good engines though and comfortable handling. I grew up around jags and have always loved the old ones (more love hate), but to me they seemed to have lost something. Only the F-Type "has" it for me. The rest are just too vanilla.

Assuming that's the stock exhaust - I think it actually sounds damn good. Better than a stock S4 (been awhile since I've heard stock) IMHO
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't stock. This was an event put on by Jaguar North America, not any local dealer.

Jaguar has promised a 6MT will be available, but non have materialized. If it were available, it would make the Jag more desireable than a B9 S4 for me.

Even in the F Pace the shifts are super quick. The "butt dyno" says that it's even comparable to my DSG.

Yeah! Jaguar knows how to make a nice sounding car - even their quieter models sound nice. Especially disappointed that Audi didn't step up their game in that area with the new B9 S4/S5.

I didn't mean to insinuate that. I've not really driven many cars with that transmission, so your experience is probably broader than mine.

My comparison is to the DSG that I drive daily, and they are both very fast.

and that's the very thing I wanted to bring up in discussion. I think most people will like the new 8-speed the s4 is getting. thanks for speaking of your experience.

Back to the transmission. The gear seems to hold a little longer before it shifts up when I was not even pushing it which I liked better. I thought in the S4 the gear shifts up too early even in dynamic mode unless I'm flooring it.

I would definitely take a XE R Sport over the new B9 S4 for the money
Simply on brand alone. Over the decades the brand was always in that 'upper' crust it seemed vs the generic BMW / Audi / Mercedes products to me anyway.

Kind of like a Jaguar / Maserati vs what everyone else buys. That's maybe why I fell for Audi, it was BMW (generic cheap lease payment, as that's what people can afford) vs Audi

Sure, but now those are parts of such prestigious companies as Tata Motors of India, and Fiat-Chrysler. Total badge engineering!! (jk)

I am not sure I would. The Audi interior is far more superior than the Jag.

I do have to agree with this. MOST of the interior of our F Pace is good quality, but there's definitely some components that I've questioned their decision on use and placement....
