Is there a custom intake DIY?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a universal K&N intake sitting around and I'm curious to know if there's a link to someone that has customized an intake for the B8 or other models?

Looking over at the ESC tuning site, the intakes start at $280+ and I'd really enjoy crafting a heat shield together or using the existing box and customize it. It's actually my wifes idea as i annoy her with not having a current garage project going on.

Currently my car has an Afe drop in filter. just thought id see if i can make use of the universal K&N filter i have sitting around. plus that K&N Typhoon intake sounds has a nice added sound.

I've searched youtube and on here. nothing comes up

    cheers

thanks guys, i completed the intake and here is my review. I'll be making a few more minor adjustments to the air scoop/heat shield but for now im just trying to enjoy the completed project :)

    what I bought:
    - Thermo- Tec 12 x 24 $22
    - M-D Building Products 56020 1-Feet by 2-Feet Galvanized Steel Sheet $11 each x 2.
    - K&N RF-1047 Universal Air Filter $61
    total : $105
I already had a silicone turbo inlet pipe and Id recommend having this as you will need to cut it down on both ends to adjust the intake position. (ill post pictures in the future)

    Pro:
    - saved $170 to $190 dollars (compared to the Typhoon or Luft-Technik intake respectively) or saved $370 compared to APR's Carbonio's intake
    - fun DIY project, mostly easy
    - It greatly enhanced the DV+ i have. I really like the whooossh it makes when shifting now. I didnt experience this before with my drop in.
    - supposed increase in HP (though not enough to notice... its never enough haha)

    cons:
    - has that annoying whistle/ high pitch sound when moderately accelerating, not there with slow accel and full throttle. see link -> http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...i-A4-2-0/page5
    - wear gloves or you'll have cuts from getting creative with the heat shield ( i kept taking my gloves off, god damnit!)
    - careful with the maf cord and plastic clips when removing

So im guessing it's the same sound has the Typhoon. I'd really like to meet up with someone that has an intake to compare it to. Videos don't do enough justice.

conclusion: If you're someone that likes to do things yourself and save money Id suggest you make you're own intake and post about it. Maybe you can improve upon what i've done here. ill try to post more of a step by step with cut dimensions i used for the heat shield/ air scoop. just be warned, do this at your own risk and be aware of the annoying whistle these intakes make. I have an aFe drop in for back up that i can see myself going back to eventually, unless someone knows how to get that annoy whistle away. For now im quite satisfied.

Most just grab a drill and start making holes. I'd grab a lava heat sheild, some sheet metal, and a cone filter to start. Fab up a box, mount heat sheild on the side closest to exhaust manifold. Use the stock lower half of the existing air box and make your own top.

All jokes a side, what you describe is what i have in mind. However, im looking for a thread/video etc. that someone has done or attempted, to give me some inspiration before I start.

The airbox has been a very similar design for all a4's, all the way back to the b5. Check out some of the older generation forums, something is bound to turn up.

I agree with everything said so far, but it all depends on how you want to place it, what materials you need, and I guess getting an adapter for the air box sensor? You can buy clamps and pipes and couplers at an autozone.

I appreciate the Autozone tip. I'm thinking i want it similarly placed as the Typhoon. Though, Maybe modify the top end of the OE air box to house it. Then drill out a to 4 inch diameter hole in the bottom of air box. The OE air box bottom actually has a round area that looks like it was meant to be cut out to feed in air from below.

It would be a good idea to take advantage of the OEM air scoop as well. You could leave the air box and mod it, but it seems easier to just delete it, use the free space to figure out where to couple and place the pipes, and trim them accordingly. Once you're done with measurements and just getting the pipes in place, you'll have to figure out a way to fit an adapter for the air box sensor, to avoid all those error lights and codes that come up when it's unplugged. It may be easier to just make a heat shield yourself, rather than chop up the air box. If you're planning in keeping the car for a long time, cutting up the air box is fine, but if you want to keep your OEM parts for safety, or to return to stock, I'd suggest the former.

You're what my inner thoughts need on this modification. haha. thanks man. Ya im trying to see what i can use for a heat shield material. For instance, used a peice of metal with a heat resistant material on the engine size? perhaps two equally cut pieces of metal with either heat resistant material sandwiched between them OR just a 1/4 inch gap separating the two sheets? (picture a free standing interior wall in your house. it has two piece of drywall gapped with insulation.... or sometimes no insulation depending on the POS that built the home haha)

Ill definately utilize the air scoop. do you know where i can find some foam trim for around the heat shield https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/157088_x800.jpg

You can order things like that off Amazon. But if you can't wait -
Use a long metal sheet, folded 3 ways into a box. Use the power part on the right as the receptacle for your piping.
There's no point in having a thin heat shield like you said, so maybe find a flat pillow and take a bit of cotton out of it, and wrap it around the metal box in plastic wrap.
Once you get your heat - resistant wrap, layer it over the cotton/foam you laid under the plastic wrap. Try your best to flatten it during the wrap. Your shield will have some volume and still retain a well- made texture. Make sure to cut the metal hole for the pipes first, though.

I'll draw some pictures when I can and upload them.

    very helpful drawing

Though i think there's some insulation material i can get that is rated better than cotton and plastic wrap :)

    ill look around

Noico Liner 157 Mil 37.5 Sqft Car Heat Insulation Pad, Foam Self-adhesive Sound Deadening and Automotive Dampening Mat for Cars (1/6'' Sound Deadener) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00URV8MFC..._I1eExbZXG28ZE

Maybe some of this stuff? The cotton isn't really for the heat, it's just there to add texture. The heat insulation wrap that goes over the cotton was what I thought would provide the real insulating effect.

Also another thing to make sure of is that the top of said box doesn't get covered. For one, you'd like to see the big ass filter because racecar, but also, it may choke the intake a bit...

Good work. The thing we want next is an adapter for our air box sensor. If you do the mod, and we come up with a solid plan, I'll do it on my A5 as well.

After looking through a ton of the different universal K&N filters. I'm almost positive this is used on the Typhoon.
    http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?prod=RF-1047

they have one that's another 0.5 inches or 1 inch longer but from what ive measured in the engine bay of the A4, the RF-1047 would be a better fit.

Alright, I haven't had any luck finding a sensor adapter for our intake hose. What material would you prefer for the pipes?

Sounds great. for the adapter, are you just referring to hooking up the filter to the MAF? a nice coupler sleeve with two ring clamps should do the trick.

As for the heat shield form, I'm looking at some ducting that may work. I also have a big 1/4 inch flat peice of Corian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corian
that could be used but not sure it would withstand the head. Hence the need for some of that thermal insulation i posted above. The corian sheet i have would be easy to cut dimensional and have smoother edges vs cutting from a sheet of metal and it's jagged edges.

Please post some more information on this as I too would like to try and utilize this. I'm looking for zero to 3 HP gains. I honestly think there's really no gain on intakes so I would be happy with anything that's not a loss in power haha. Mainly doing this custom intake to keep me busy, have fun, and perhaps add a little extra sound to the engine bay without having to pay a lot of money for one.

That works. And yeah, intakes and exhausts don't really do anything for power until other mods are added, maybe tunes or higher boost pressures.

AFE filter and silicone inlet added 35hp, for me. Just those modes were enough to roast any Honda Odyssey that dared rev at me.

Your intake? K&N flows high AF but cool air is better.
I still have the stock intake, my friend.

Stock intake is like the stock ecu tune. They both reduce the natural power level of the car to keep the S4 faster. Just replacing the restrictive stock air filter gets the car within 0.5 seconds in a 1/4 mile run vs a stock S4.

I don't even run a real filter anymore. I cut a hole in my hood and have a pipe running straight up from the turbo inlet with a sock over it to keep debri out and a cover to deflect rain. It's too much power to handle now and the sound knocks birds out of the sky.

I never considered that. I've always thought that there was no replacement for displacement in our cases. I'm sad that there aren't as many affordable tuning options for the b8 2.0t as other four cylinder platforms, like the Imprezas, BRZs or Evos.

OP, I respect your eagerness to create rather than buy. With that said, people don't normally make their or intakes because it will look like a bag of assholes, and probably won't work as intended. If you really want to make you own I would start by looking at the ECS intake. They sell the filter and the hose. That should be a good starting point, just look at the parts they provide. Make your own shield, and put a Eurocode badge on it.

Man, the amount of trolling going on in this thread lol. Worst case, he just puts the stock intake back on. Jeez. It's a fun project if it works, and if not, everyone who was serious about the thread just gives up and buys an intake...
