Vag-Com help with Stock vs. VRtuned vs. EPL

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so i have an idea but may need some guidance from you guys. So as you guys know I have the VR Tuned piggyback but I am considering the EPL tune as well just cause I think there is more power to be had that can't quite be had with a piggyback, and I like spending money, hahaha.

So here is my thought. When I do the EPL software they are going to send me a tablet that will work for their software and for VAG, but I don't have a VAG cable. But if I got one then I could hook up through VAG and do 0-60 and 0-100 times right?

So I could actually do a little test between stock, Piggyback and EPL. I just need to know for sure that VAG will be able to record this information for me and I need to know what cable to get? Do you think if I haven't ever messed with VAG that I would be able to do this?

    Thanks,

EPL will send you a cable that can hook to OBD2 port similar to Ross-Tech vagcom cable but it's not a Ross-Tech vagcom cable hence you can't use that cable run Ross-Tech software and so can't record 0-60 time. EPL cable is good for flashing EPL tune only. If you want to record 0-60 times, you will need Ross-Tech cable to run their software.

Alternatively, you may use Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner and pair it with Smartphone and then record data with OBD2 app of your choice. That should work as well.

Oh Ok great. Yeah I knew their cable wouldn't work but I knew the tablet they would send would work as all my computers are Mac, haha. So is there a certain Ross-Tech cable I need to get? I thought I remember seeing different versions or something.

You could also get the P3cars digital vent gauge, that records 0-60 time directly from the OBDll port 0-60 only though I believe not 0-100 also tells you a bunch of other cool/useful stuff too.

I installed my EPL ECU/TCU tune today, I haven't been able too really try it out properly yet (had my wife and daughter in the car with me) I should get chance to test it out more tomorrow and I will let you all y'all know my thoughts.
From my short time driving with the tune today I can tell you the car feels much, much quicker and faster it also feels very smooth, I am quite impressed so far, will let you know after I have spent a bit more time with it.

    Cheers

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a EPL tune myself. I'm new to tuning ECUs and am a bit gun shy. As far as flashing at home, is it a simple plug 'n play or more involved? I'm comfortable with mechanical aspects of a car but I don't feel comfortable messing with the electronics.

It's as simple as can be straight forward plug and play, plug the supplied cable into you OBDII port, other end into your laptop, start the EPL software choose flash now, select the stage one flash, installs in about 10 minuets, do the same for the TCU, done and done.
Chris will give you exact instructions when you buy and are ready to install.
I am very happy with it so far but I did only install it today, like I said I will do a review of my thoughts on the tune when I have had a bit more time with it.

    Cheers

Glad you are happy. And yes it is very easy either with our tablet or with your tablet and I can help with the procedure over the phone or email.

Thanks for the input guys! Yeah I went the OBD2 scanner and torque pro app route. I had no idea this stuff existed so I'm really glad I asked. Torque Pro app looks awesome after setting it up all last night. I ordered my vent cell phone Holder and the scanner on Amazon last night and I should have it by Sunday (gotta love Prime). Thanks again VeryBadman.
Also can't wait to hear more about your impressions of the tune AS6, please keep me posted as well!!!

Your dyno is based on a C7 which is rated at 420hp, so a question for you... Since the C7.5 has 30hp more than the C7, does this mean that the tune will be in addition to 450hp (vs. 420hp in the C7)? In other words, if the peak gain is 110hp on the C7, will the C7.5 put out 560hp vs. 530hp in the C7? Same case with the torque also?
I'm new to the tuning world so forgive me if I ask some dumb questions.

There are three different things you could do that are worth considering IMO....

    1. Buy a vag com cable and on the exact same stretch of road do full throttle data logged runs beween XX and XX mph. The logs will have a timestamp. You can compare logs from each tuner. Keep in mind the time will not be in actual seconds so dont confuse that.

    2. Just go and do the testing at your local 1/4 mile track. YOu can swap out tunes in 5 minutes.

    3. Purchase this...

Pulled the trigger on EPL. Just got the cable in the mail today. Can't wait to try this thing out. I'll post my thoughts once I get some "butt dyno" results!

It works (and looks) even better if you hook it up to your iPad instead of iPhone, and use a screen mount kit for the iPad (I actually use an iPad Mini)
