Dash cam best fuse to use from passenger side.

    Hi guys,

I did a search on this forum and it appears that there is many ways to skin a cat.

I thought id double check before i start.

    Its for a 2012' B8 A4 (facelift) model.

The fuse boxes appear to be a bit odd on the Audis, as it seems that Audi changes the fuse orientation in sync with the driver side and passenger side. (it is also odd that some fuses are Mini Fuse and some are normal sized fuze )
For e.g im from Aust, the driver side has the Dynamic Steering, Horn, lane assist & EBC fuse on the driver side (right hand drive) and the CD player etc on the LH / Passenger side.

If I was to run it on the Driver side (right hand side) which would be the best fuses to use for ACC (accessory) and B+ (constant power)

i was thinking perhaps ACC for the Horn & B+ for the tail light sensor?

by the way, i haven't confirmed it yet as i haven't for a test pen, but it appears the empty slots do not offer power.

    Thanks in advance.

which dash cam did you get, and how familiar /proficient are you with installation?
I have a pretty fair idea as I had successfully fitted dashcams on two of my jap cars previously but id like to see what fuses people like to use for Audis.

allow me to explain, with my model its a bit of a grey area, yes it is a B8.5 facelift. (im not sure what happened to the rest of the world but here in Aust) The facelift was officially released in 2013' ... my a4 is a September 2012' model. Its still the facelift and pretty much identical to the 2013... the only difference I am aware of is that my engine is the CDNC motor (155KW). This motor is the embarrassing motor with the faulty piston ring that chewed through engine oil. But, apparently they fixed the oil consumption issue on all remaining 2012 models with CDNC as soon as they introduced this facelift (which is my model). but when 2013 came, they introduced the newer CNC motor which has 165kw (im pretty sure that is your model).

so the long and the short of it, yes mine is a B8.5.. but sometimes.... not so 8.5, if that makes sense.

Back to dashcams, its kinda silly Audi utilized mini fuses for some fuses but used large conventional ones for others.

I only had mini fuse piggy backs, so on the drivers side (right hand drive) I was able to hook the ACC (accessory) wire to an empy slot on Column A (black) identified as 'Active Lane Assist' (which my car is not equipped with). yes I ended up finding out that the empty slots do actually work when I bought a circuit tested today. So the dash cam is currently working as usual, only when the car is running & ignition ON.

Ill now need to buy another Large piggy back and hook it somewhere on an empty slot in the RED column which seems to have constant power.

I kinda was wanting someone here to tell me if its OK or safe to use empty slots, but nothing has blown up yet.

    Bump,

anyone know whats the worst that could happen if you utilize an empty slot for fuse that was intended for an option that you don't have, say; Sunroof and use it for something else?

    cheers,

An empty slot probably won't have any leads attached to send power through it. The best way to do it would be to grab a voltmeter and check voltage in the various fuse slots with the car off and on to find a proper switched power source. Then grab a fuse splicer from Autozone and plug it in there. That's what I did.

That's strange, the empty slots on my vehicle had power running through them, even though I didn't have for e.g Active Lane Assist nor was a fuse in place.

I attached the ACC side of the dashcam wire to it... and it worked. Hence, asking whats the worst that could happen.

Also, I don't have the sunroof on my vehicle, but I had tested with the circuit tester and power does run through it.

    hmmm
