pardon my ignorance.. but i always wondered if these pieces were plug and play or if your car already needs to come with the required plug? This piece goes in the center console, correct?

Not quite. It goes in the glove box kind of where some models have the CD changer. I had one and just took it out to put in an AMI unit. There was a cable that I unplugged from the back that runs from the glovebox to the head unit, but it doesn't plug directly into the head unit (i.e. it's woven into the quad lock connector).

I'm not sure if all models came with that cable than runs to the glovebox but it wouldn't be hard to find it if you wanted.

I have this setup in my car at the moment, with an RNSE. It is not direct plug and play unless your car came with a CD changer from the factory. If not, you'll need the loom (which Audi sells, I have the part number available) and you'll need to figure out someway to mount it in your glove box, as it isn't sized to fit unless, again, your car came with a CD changer from the factory.

Interesting. When you say "...came with a CD changer from the factory" do you mean in the glovebox? I had the Symphony II+ with the CD changer built in, so the only thing that came standard in the glovebox was the iPod dock

Mine came with a Symphony 2+ as well. Believe me, this doesn't fit cleanly in a standard glove box. Only in cars that came with a CD changer in the glove box.

You had an iPod dock in the glove box? Hmmmm, must be a different box layout, if that's the case. This thing simply doesn't fit in my glove box without a lot of slack.

I looked into this a bit more and found this link (http://audi.bernardiparts.com/images...3A4TT_iPOD.pdf). Looks like some models came with what they called "CD Changer Prep" such that the glove box was either ready for a CD changer or already had a built in iPod dock (which uses the same glove box layout). The latter is what I had before I swapped it for an AMI unit. Strikes me as bizarre, though, that any car with an in-dash CD changer would come with a CD changer in the glove box.

Never realized other models didn't have anything. Apologies for the confusion. Silly Audi.
