Looking for some help diagnosing a Tiptronic issue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've read and googled and read and googled, and I'm more confused now than when I started. I'm hoping someone with some experience might be able to help.

Car in question is a 2006 2.0T/Quattro/Tiptronic with 186.5k miles on it.

Driving home from vacation last weekend I got some "shuddering" on the highway once the car got good and hot. It felt exactly like when a coil goes bad. Sudden jumps, or "kicks" form the driveline, with the only noticeable difference being the tach was jumping up slightly in this case, where a bad coil has the tach falling. I've continued driving around town on short trips all week and had no more of the symptoms. Monday night on the way home from a further destination (~45min drive) the car completely lost it's mind. The PRDNS is completely lit up (pic below), and it acts as though the car is stuck in perhaps 3rd or 4th gear with no Torque Convertor lockup at all. From what I've read this is "Limp Mode" and usually has to do with the transmission not getting good input, or not being able to control the outputs properly. I was able to limp the car home (~25mi) this way by avoiding most stops, and cruising on the expressway trying as best I could to not cause traffic problems.

Here's a picture of the instrument cluster taken after it happened:

I scanned the trans controller with VAG-COM and got these codes. I cleared those and tried to drive the car again. Didn't even get out of the driveway before it broke itself again.

After another try I did a full scan and got these codes. I cleared these as well, but no help. Nothing overly concerning that I can see. Looks like I have an EVAP leak (AGAIN) to deal with, and the radio/bluetooth module isn't working quite right, but otherwise nothing that would cause the transmission to lose it's mind like this.

    End ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course it's been less than 30 days since I mailed in the final payment. I was hoping to drive this car for a few more years, but don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a car that is arguably not worth more than about $3,500 in a good market. I like the car and don't mind putting some money in it, but I won't sink a ton into it at this point.

If there are things that I can check like wiring, and sensors, and other things of that nature, then I'm all for it. I just have no idea how to even find these sensors, much less how to check them. I'm savvy with a set of tools and a multi-meter, and don't mind getting dirty, I just have no idea where to start on this one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Electrical issue. Check all fuses and relays. Unhook the battery, discharge the leads together for 15 minutes and rehook the battery. Scan again.

Also check there is no water in the ECU box.

Discharge the leads togethor? You mean hook them togethor to drain capacitors and such?

Does this car have a separate TCM and PCM or are they integrated into one unit like a GM vehicle?

Thanks for the help. I'll go through the car tonight and post back with what I find.

OK, Spent some time with the car tonight.

Disconnected the battery for 20 or so minutes while I did other things. Checked and cleaned the ECM compartment. It's nice and clean, looks like it's never been wet in there. Checked every fuse and relay that I could find inside the box. All look/smell ok, and all fuses were in great condition, not so much as corrosion on the terminals. Checked the plug going to the transmission. All the wires there look to be in good shape, no damage to connector, no signs of water intrusion or other such damage. I have pics of everything checked below. I reconnected the battery, and pulled a full scan from VAG-COM again. Found the same P0717 code again from the transmission.

    Here's the ECM compartment:

NOW.....Here's where it gets fun. The car is working perfectly again. Drove it up/down the block, then out to the gas station and back (didn't want to stray to far from home). Overall it performed as well as it ever has. Shifts are firm, but not harsh. All modes work as expected, and there was no surging/stumbling. It did great! What the hell car?!?!?!

The only thing I can think of that ties the problems together is heat. The trans seems to act just fine when cool, but once really warmed up (notice the freeze frame data has 93deg C as when the error code was logged) the problems appear. Kind of hard to test this tonight as it's a good 25deg F cooler outside than it was on Monday when it fully went into limp mode (96 then, 71 tonight). Not sure how else to test other than to keep the VAG-COM machine in the car with me, and keep driving the thing around until it happens again, then try to get a datalog of what is happening.

Now, on to the log, and the research I've found from that. Looks like the P0717 code points me to the G182 sensor. This sensor appears to be inside the transmission on the ZF5HP19A (pics from tdiclub.com show it above the valve body), and I would assume that the ZF6HP19A would be similar. I can't find this sensor for sale anywhere. I don't really have a problem pulling the pan and replacing the fluid (probably needs it anyway), but I need to replacement part before I can get too enthused about replacing it. I'm going to call the dealership in the morning, but I have a suspicion that they won't be able to get ahold of the transmission internal pieces due to the replace instead of refurb/rebuild mentality of most dealerships now days. Anyone have any input/info on where I can find one of these sensors?

    Anyone have any other thoughts?

I saw that picture as well. That was noted in a TDi thread about a ZF5HP trans. I'm sure the ZF6HP is similar, but it's hard to say with these transmissions. Looks like that DIY is for a CVT, my trans doesn't look like that one at all.

Car has been working flawlessly all week. I've found it's replacement, and will most likely be putting it up for sale here soon. Thanks for the help!

From what I gathered the TCM is part of the ECM on a 2.0t. If you take out the engine you have to unplug the main connector for the trans b/c it's part of the engine harness. And it dose not plug in to another harness any where else other than the injector harness. If you find a sensor take the part number off the back and type it in on Google. Works pretty well with a decent amount of b7 parts. My guess is I'd shoot for that trans out put speed sensor. You can take it off and check it, hook your volt meter up and set it to resistance and spin a bolt head in front of the sensor and you will watch the sensor work as it goes past a flat it will drop off and search and when it passes a corner it will show a change in resistance. Or pick it up and wave it past metal and you can watch the same thing. If that checks out good check the wireing between the sensor and the trans main plug. Then work your way up towards the ECU. Use a test light to check wireing if you need further questions about checking wiring I'll check back. If you do it wrong or don't know what your doing you will over look something thinking it's good and that was really your problem. Or fry something expensive.
