Has anyone bought a california car from out of state? Picking up a B7 this Friday

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am picking up a B7 Rs4 from San Fran this Friday. The car is being purchased by a friend of mine but I am going to pick it up from the seller and drive it back here to Colorado. Im wondering if anyone has done this before.

I will need a temp moving plate... But I am not the owner of the car... Will I be able to get one?

Just wondering if anyone has done this or has experience with this. California is its own monster for registration and all that jazz so any help would be appreciated!

    thanks in advance

    Hey vailshred,

If you or your friend are AAA members they would be able to help you with all of your DMV paperwork.
I have purchased vehicles in other states and the first thing I do once I get back home is go to AAA.
    Best of luck.

you get the transit from the DMV here it needs to be under his name and you need a insurance card of the person that bought the vehicle and of course yours to show your insured, you need his for his insurance should cover a newly bought car for a grace period before full insurance policy is active, other wise your set. the new Colorado temp tags are nicer too look more legit then a piece of paper so less hassle as you travel through the 2 states to get back here

for awhile you didnt even need the transit just paper work showing you just got it (hence why you also need one of his insurance cards due to the bill of sale will show his name) and its good to have a paper he signs saying he authorized you to drive it you just have a higher likeliness
of getting pulled and having to explain it

a lot of times the insurance company will tell you exactly how they want you to do this, i doubt its change in 3 years but just in case

I did this in 2010. In CA the plates stay with the car. I drove mine from San Diego to Cincinnati with the CA plates. No problem.

CA car to PA. Left the CA plate on it. I just made sure I had insurance on my end. And we had a signed bill of sale. I took it to a local tag shop for a new plate and registration. Inspection shop thereafter.

I think you have up to 30 days to do the transfer (may be depending on state), I say just land on SF and drive it back, great road trip

    Thanks everyone!
So the Rs4 has been unregistered/expired for over a year. The plates that he has are no bueno. I called DMV in Cali and the lady said I would have to get a 1 way trip permit. Its $8 and goes on front window.
The seller is not willing to let me take the plates since they are expired.
I am going to DMV here in Colorado tomorrow to try to get a temp tag for the ride but I doubt it will happen. We do not have the title yet and wont for a couple weeks due to a lein on the car. The Bill of sale can suffice as ownership. I think the 1 way tag, buyers insurance card and mine + the bill of sale will be good if I run into any problems.
Im excited for the drive. I just bought a b6 S4 from Reno a few months ago and the drive was killer. Although this will be different since that was a 150k mile s4 and this trip is a 1 owner 20k mile Rs4..
Im pretty grateful to say the least.

I appreciate all your feedback and time 👊👊👊
