Nothing to prevent it really other than making sure the dsg is well maintained.

Hopefully you bought a car that has had two services done on the dsg already (one at 35k and another at 75k miles). Typically the entire transmission does not fail unless you've been driving around on a failing mech unit for a while. Usually it's the circuit board that needs replacing (~1300 in parts and labor) but sometimes the mech unit itself needs to be replaced (~4500 in parts and labor).

Welcome to the b8 s4 forum

    Get a good aftermarket warranty.

A Warranty might be useful depending on the price of it (vs the value of the car) and these cars can have rough idle at times so the rough idle is probably not related to anything DSG.

It's mostly just luck. Keep up with fluid changes, but beyond that I don't worry about the DSG issues. Honestly even a completely failed mechatronics unit is barely worse than a clutch job on a 6MT car even if it does happen.

Some common symptoms of a failing unit include a big clunk as it shifts into first. Another one is if you get a big clunk when shifting from park, or into park while stationary. Sometimes a warning message will appear too saying gearbox malfunction.

Adding on, when you come to a stop it will lurch/buck forward before downshifting into 1st and coming to a stop. RPM surging in gear while cruising... If I remember anything else, I'll edit this post
