    Dreaded CEL light. Need advice.

Good evening everyone. So today just when i started driving to the beach i notice my CEL light has now turned on and is steady. I have not noticed any change in performance or any major noise differences. I have taken a video of the said noise which I have noticed and was curious if anyone had any idea what it was. I have yet to pull the codes as I don't have an OBD reader myself so tomorrow I will get them... until then here is the noise.

Just throwing this out there the only issue I have had with this car lately is the temp gauge has been working on and off. Not sure if that would be causing an issue as its been like that for over a month.

You have to get the DTC code.

Its impossible to troubleshoot and repair without.

    Until that, its all guessing...

Then, if your not going to DIY repair it...take it to a shop.

Asking here whats wrong with your car, without the code, and then not DIY repairing is a total waste of time. Unless you going to pay us.

Also, there is over 14 years of previous posts here...150% certain the issue has been covered before....search!

I don't think he needs to diy in order to learn about his problem. If he was planning on taking it to a shop it doesn't hurt to have your guns loaded and know about the problem / situation before hand.

    I think you are misunderstanding.

How is anyone here supposed to help him load his metaphorical gun without knowing what the DTC is?

Once he has the DTC, we can help him diagnose the problem and he can then choose to fix it himself or take it somewhere.

If he has no plans on fixing this himself, he can always take it to a shop and have them report the DTC's for him and he can then choose to have the shop repair his car or not.

    Make sense?

He said if you're not going to DIY then take it to a shop. I don't agree with that statement is all. I never said he didn't need the DTC to diagnose. Make sense?

How else would he repair it if he isnt going to do it himself and not take it to a shop?

So to answer your question, No, it does not make sense.

Maybe you're to dense to understand the statement. If you get your rocks off by instigating an online argument, have at it.

"Can we all just get along?"- Rodney King

From the way the opening thread is written. The OP seems like a total noob. I mean he cant really expect us to magically figure it out but a few words and a you tube video. So I think he would be better served to take it to a shop. Sure it'd be nice to be armed with some codes but even so it might be too much for his realm of understanding. So realistically it probably wont make a darn bit of difference eitherway. Let's just hope he finds an honest mechanic.

That sounds rough to me. Hows the oil level?
I know that is quite basic, but you havent given to many details.

I would guess your temp gauge sometimes working might be a problem, if the car actually thinks the temp is fluctuating that much.

Just to finish this thread up.

The code was P0411. Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected

After inspecting for any broken hoses I noticed the Elbow Hose Air Pump Pipe to Check Valve Pipe was broken. $38 for a new one at my local AUDI dealer. Much cheaper online but I needed it done the same day. Took me about 10 minutes to swap it out...luckily nothing was in the way and it was very easy to get to. Hopefully that turns my CEL off and I don't have to look elsewhere.

As far was my temperature gauge not working...I will be looking into replacing the sensor in the near future...looks like a bitch to do though.

    Thanks.

Glad to hear you Did It Yourself. You should definitely invest in an OBD2 scanner or, if you plan on keeping the Audi for a while, VCDS.

Replacing that hose should fix the problem. If the o2 sensor isn't reading the increased air flow it will trigger the CEL. The torn hose was letting that air out to the atmosphere rather than through the combi valve and into your exhaust.

Temp sensors are not that hard to replace.

Thank you for the detailed response MurkyRivers_A4, it is much appreciated. I do plan on looking into an OBD2 sensor but I am honestly not quite sure which one to pick out. As far as VCDS I was under the impression that is Windows based and unfortunately, I only own a Mac at the moment.

They have 40 dollar ones at your local auto parts store. As long as it can read the code and tell you the number, you can then google what the code means and look for fixes.

I only have windows comps and am unsure of VCDS being used on apple product.

just an FYI, I run VCDS on my mac through a software called VMware Fusion, it enables a separate, Windows operating system to be run over the Mac OS. You will need to have a copy of a Windows OS to upload into VMware. I am running Windows 8, and VCDS works like a charm.
    just enough to want more

Thanks thomastollar, I have read about multiple programs that allows VCDS to run through Mac OS, but my issue is I do not own a copy of Windows at all. Might be worth spending the money to get it though it seems.
