    UPDATE...

OK before taking delivery the Audi tech tried all sorts of things to have it defaulted to "OFF" but no luck! It seems we are stuck with this annoying system.

I have been testing the system out on the road and I still need to figure a few things but this is what I know so far...

    - Unfortunately on this car selecting "Dynamic control" will not disable the system like on previous Audis.

    - So far the only other way to deactivate the system (aside from using its own switch) is to select the ESP/Traction control to "OFF". However with the ESP set to "OFF" the cruise control cannot be used!

    - Braking directly affects this annoying system. If you brake gently the system will turn "OFF" the car after several seconds (5-10 seconds) after you stop. However if you hit the brakes hard or are very aggressive at braking, the system shuts off the car immediately when it comes to a full stop.

    - The system needs to see zero forward speed to activate. If you roll through a stop at 1 MPH, it will not activate.

    - The system needs to see that the car's battery is fully charged to activate. If the battery is low, it doesn't shut off the car. This may be related to the hard braking but I need to speak to a Audi tech about it.

More experimenting to come after I figure out a setting available in the driver's menu. This may also be related to the brakes.

    Jet,
I've got my driving mode set to Individual with most of the settings at Dynamic and it's staying off I think all the time.
I actually just hit the auto button almost by habit though now.

I'll have to double check that again in Dynamic mode.

On the positive side, at least the Audi start-stop on the A4 is quite smooth operation, and engine stops and restarts can hardly be felt, at least in my B9.

The Mercedes CLA250 I traded for my B9 had the same feature, it could not be turned off by default and the whole car lurched badly when the engine restarted. I just hated it on my CLA (among other things, needs different thread).

Dynamic mode and in Sport hasn't turned off for me yet, in Drive it definitely does.

I guess my M3 isn't a performance car since it has auto stop/start as well? /s

Is it defaulted to ON every time you start the car? My co-worker has a new M4 here in Germany, and the engine hasn't turned off during our drives around town. I will have to ask him about it. It is US spec.

It remembers your last setting. I have mine off and I don't have to keep turning it off.

I had a B9 A4 as loaner today and was trying to get the start/stop feature to work. It does not turn the car off unless I turn off the climate control. AC On/Off made no difference. It was on Drive mode and drive select is on Auto. Also the door handles have that groove there like the B8 for the comfort access no key unlock/lock door but it doesn't unlock or lock by touching. I had to use the remote to lock/unlock. I didn't need to insert the key to start the engine though...

Sometimes if the AC is on, the car may not turn off since the car has to keep the compressor running. It will kick in when the car battery is charged enough or your AC isn't running at full blast.

I hated both the Auto Start/Stop function and the seatbelt warning loud noise when I first bought the car. As my own workaround since the dealer (like you said) cannot program it to default as OFF, this is what I do...

    1) Auto Start/Stop - I have finally found the Auto Start/Stop activation point when you press on your brake pedal. I believe the point right before the Auto Stop kicks in is after 70%. You won't feel comfortable doing it right off the bat and will feel like you won't brake on time, but you eventually you will adapt and get used to it.

    2) Seatbelts annoying loud noise - Buckle your seatbelt BEFORE you start your Engine.

Let me know if you find these information accurate! :)

My friend's A6 had his car's system defaulted to "OFF" but that's in Montreal Canada.

I have already asked my dealer to have that switched to "OFF" prior to my B9 delivery in two weeks. I also asked for the auto lock feature to be deleted.
Carista OBD tool will disable it. You have to buy the yearly $39.99 subscription to be able to customize it.

I did this to my '17 B9, with the Carista app. Though, it's tied to the AC. it's the only way. As long as the AC is switched on, auto start/stop will remain off.
What I got into the habit of doing before this was available through Carista, was to just tap the auto into sport mode. It locks out the auto start/stop.

There are a couple things about the start stop system. It is spidered into various aspects of the car, so there is no way for it to default to off.

There are a couple work arounds, the AC work around is probably the most common. Driving in S will also disable it. I tend to leave my AC set to low and it does the trick.

I permanently turned my start/stop off on my German A4 B9 Avant using the Obeleven. The car was also at the dealer and scanned several times.
