New to B7's. Should I buy this car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey B7-er's. I've seen this car listed and I'm curious to know if it's worth considering. It's a 2008 A4 Avant, 2.0T, 6-spd. with 281,xxx km (174,500 Miles) on it.

I've always wanted an Avant but most of them I've looked at were automatics. I currently have a 2003 B6 sedan and want to know a how much different the 2.0 is vs. the 1.8. Yes, I'm aware of the VW groups famous coil-packs, valve gunk, fuel pumps, etc. on the 2.0's but other than that, not much else.

What I'm really interested in is there reliability vs the 1.8. My B6 has around 230,xxx kms and I recently did the TB and WP, suspension, etc. And all work was done by myself so I'm familiar with the B6/7 chassis, except for the engine.

    A couple of more questions:
    1) What are the difference between the FSI and the TFSI 2.0T engines besides one having a TB vs a chain.
    2) Reliability of the 2.0T in this chassis.
    3) Does it look like this car have the S-Line badge on the grill? The ad doesn't really specify whether or not it's an S-Line.

Here are a few pics of the car and I'm interested in going to look at it this weekend. Should I even bother with the high mileage?

    Thanks to all!

Check cam follower... that's pretty much it.

    1) What are the difference between the FSI and the TFSI 2.0T engines besides one having a TB vs a chain.
TFSI oil filter is in a different position... fixed cam follower issue... more ponies..
    2) Reliability of the 2.0T in this chassis.
CHECK CAM FOLLOWER and also check for oil leaks, rear vacuum pump housing, oil filter housing seals, oil cooler seal.
    3) Does it look like this car have the S-Line badge on the grill? The ad doesn't really specify whether or not it's an S-Line.
All 08's were "sline" but "true" slines came with badge on rear door moldings.

The 2008s came with the SLine exterior package, but you can see that car has the 4 spoke wheel and it looks like stock suspension. I have a silver B7A4 Avant 6 speed with about 260k miles and it has been very troublefree. The 2.0T is very similar to the 1.8 so the TB/WP procedure would be easy.

I did a quick search and would like to know if the cam follower issue is only on the HPFP? Or all of the cam followers in the engine? That's like 20 of them if it's still 5 valves-per-cylinder.

Here few items of concerns, this list come from my observations and my cousin's experience ( mechanic at audi dealer)

    - Cam follower wear, you can get metal part in the engine, could result to major engine faillure. Inspect the cam follower and the cam shaft wear.
    - timing belt engine
    - cam chain tensionner appear to fail in some rare cases.
    - thermostat appear to fail often
    - n80 valve appear to fail
    - coil packs appear to fail
    - oil pump and balancer shaft can fail in rare cases.
    - carbon built up
    - pcv valve appear to fail
    - plastic oil housing appear to fail
    - piston rings are fragile = oil consumption in some cases.
    - 2.0fsi oil consumption due to many reason.
    - diverter valve with rubber, will fail
    - windows regulators will fail.

Other than that, if the regular maintenance is done, it will last.

Some issues sounds typical of my B6 as well. Though the oil consumption is making me nervous. My 1.8 doesn't lose a drop of oil between 8000km changes.

Cam follower looks like a relatively easy job. Now is it worth the CAD$6500 they're asking? Assuming it runs and drives nice. Since it's a used car dealer, I'm thinking it's pretty cheap for an 08, even for the higher mileage. It definitely looks nice from the pics.

Sorry. I'm sounding like a NOOB. Not intended.

I lost maybe 1/2 a quart every 5000 miles. I would suggest that you have someone else take a good look at it before you drop the cash on it. don't let the mileage scare you, there are some guys here with more miles on their cars and running well. Good Luck

Whatever they are asking they KNOW that's a highball price. Look it over good and if all checks out and you like it, hit 'em LOW.... like $4000... they won't settle there, but you should easily be able to get $500 off minimum, probably $1000+. Be ready to walk away. You have a car that you KNOW and just did a bunch of work to maintain. Don't give up easily when you don't have to.

All 2008's got "s-line appearance" packages since it was the end of that model run and they wanted to move them. I wouldn't let that deter you. You could easily swap the wheel with a 3-spoke and the suspension to something sportier and you pretty much have everything s-line. I've never once regretted not getting an S-line. Never been a huge fan of the grey interior, but that's just personal.

As others have said, TB/WP, cam follower, control arms, diverter valve. All trouble spots, but easy to fix if you get them before they fail. The 2.0 engine is a great engine and from all accounts is a significant bump up from the 1.8. I don't use/lose oil either. The only time I've ever had to top it off was when I let it go 6-7k miles between oil changes. i usually stick to 5k and don't add oil in between. So, that's not every car.

It looks like its a quattro, but might want to check. My assumption is the grill badge states quattro, not s-line.
Also to be areal s-line it should have the rear wing which it looks like it hasn't. Also the door blades look too thin for s-line. Front bumper def is an s-line bumper and rear lower valance is s-line too. This wants me to double check on front/rear collision damage. Although it might be nothing to worry about.

It has the quattro badge on the trim above the glove box. Could have been swapped out, but not likely. Given that the OP is in Canada it's very likely to be a quattro vehicle, but again, not a guarantee. Only way to be sure... 4 wheel burnout!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

Serious question.. can you spin all 4 on dry pavement with your 07? Going JHM 2 pretty soon and am genuinely curious whether a stock clutch will grab that much or just burn that lovely clutch death smell.

    +1.

curious to know if it's the original engine...

If all the maintenance was done before the 2008 proposed 12000km interval service, with good oil, I believe it could be a good deal around 4-5000$.

It's not the ''base'' ''base'' model, at least it got hid and symphony ii+.

This man knows what the hell he is talking about.

Also I'd like to add that there is one good advantage that you are looking at the 2008 model:

Experience tells me that many of the bugs are more or less ironed out. Things might fail but should fail less. The 2008 models have more updated revisions of their hardware.

Don't let that milage turn you away. Audi interiors hold together with age more than others. Drive the car, make sure it doesn't creak and feels tightly put together.

I got a car with 135k miles. My ride is tight as a drum. Better maintained than most other milage cars.

Make sure you get service history. If there is no service history, I would highly consider to pass up on the buy.
