Interesting move, curious to see how this effects driveability and performance.

The main drive to the dual clutch transmision was fuel economy, but the new ZF planetary transmission has excellant fuel economy & is easier to program for smooth low speed shifting. Also ZF has an optional modules on the 8HP planetary transmission.

After a year in each, I would say I much prefer the tranny from my old A6 3.0T to the one in my S6. The A6 (subjectively) felt a lot smoother.

I rather think it's mainly cost not only to produce but also fix any warranty claims related to DSG in high performance Audi's. However, though it may not sound as cool but I have zero concern performance wise after I have lived with that transmission in both 228 and RS7 for over 2 years.

I agree, the 8 speed in my A8 and before that A7, was far smoother than the DSG in my S6.

Agree here as well. I test drove the s6 and the a6 and ultimately decided on the a6. The smoothness of the tranny, as well as the tunabilty of the motor were the key factors. I felt that the DSG felt rough at slower speeds.

Glad there is finally and auto that has been praised universally!

Let me correct, no doubt the s6 is a monster and can be tuned to the nines. In my case, I thought the 3.0t could be tuned enough to make me happy with it over a stock s6.. If I wasn't stuck in traffic all of the time, the DSG wouldn't have bothered me as much...

Weird. I drove the A6 and S6 and when the S6 was in D mode it felt great. Sport was a bit jerky and uneasy at lower speeds but when switching to D is was very nice.

It's not unbearable, actually I found it working decently most of the time but it's still not as smooth as 8SP.

Is smoothness the issue? I've had a Porsche with PDK for several years and love it but I never thought it was terribly smooth, especially under maximum acceleration. I just got the A7 so I can't say how I will like the 8sp auto, but I am not tracking the car so it doesn't matter that much. However, I seriously considered the S7 because of the dual clutch automatic. PDK is like a 6sp in the hand of a brilliant driver, which I am not.

This type of statement makes no sense to me...
"Beck elaborated on why the decision was made, saying that up to 295 pound-feet of torque is the perfect combination for the dual clutch transmission, but both the S4 and S5 have more than that with 369 lb-ft of twist."

    The B8 S4 and S5 has 325 lb-ft and S6 has 406+ lb-ft in stock form.

I think the same as others stated smoothness and low speed drive-ability may be the dual-clutch Achilles heel. Although that doesn't explain why they are moving the dual-cluch to many of their entry level A line models. (Unless they don't need smoothness?...lol)

Or does it mean yet again Audi is grossly underestimating HP/Torque and the new B9 S5/S5 motor will actual have 450lb-ft of torque...
