    Factors affecting Fuel Economy

Not that we look for high mpg out of our cars, but I just got a loaner yesterday for my 15k mi service and some other gremlins. Coming to the point- Even on DIS, my A6 never showed any tremendously huge numbers and I have been pretty much averaging 23-24 mpg 75/25 hwy/city. However today, in the loaner, the dis mpg is nuts. Showed me 33.1 mpg on the way to work. Of course that is overestimated by the car but kinda baffled as to what might be affecting my fuel economy. My car has shown 510mi to E at best, but this loaner came in at 545mi to E. The differences are that my A6 has the 20" sport package with Michelin a/s 3 and the loaner has is a premium plus 3.0T with 18" wheels and goodyear eagle. Any thoughts? Is there something I should get checked out?

Wow. That IS a big difference.
I had an S4 and now an SQ5 admittedly without stop-start or clutched supercharger like the 2016's now.
I used to get an average calculated 20mpg in the S4 in similar 75/25 hwy/city driving as you. (Which would have read as 22mpg on the optimistic trip computer.)
I get closer to 18 in the SQ5 but nearly all city, it can get up near 24 on flat (low speed) highway but not at 70+mph.
So your mileage seems in the ballpark for the 3.0T, I am not sure why you would be seeing such stellar mileage in the loaner. Even with smaller wheels over-inflated to the max you shouldn't get +10mpg that is diesel territory.

Ok I should have mentioned clearly. My 23-24mpg was manually calculated. I get 26-28 usually on DIS. My 2013 used to show up to 34 in DIS but that was after the tune and I was able to get up to 29mpg calculated. But never even touched 26mpg on my 2016.But 33 on the loaner is just crazy. So just thought of what could be going on.

Hmm... i do get 535mi range on a fuel tank and my highest average on highway has been 33mpg.
When combined i dropped to 28.

I remember my old days on the C6 when i had to fight to get 24mpg.

It's a loaner so I'm sure it doesn't probably have too much in the way of mileage on it, but a little antidote, I was averaging what I thought was great mileage on my B6 1.8T. I didn't have a lean code or anything but noted that I was still running my original fuel filter so I changed it. My average MPG immediately afterward ( and still) dropped by 5-10MPG. Maybe coincidence, but I always chalked it up to the filter, that was the only thing that changed.

On a side note, what are you putting in it for gas?

Cool so I will ask them to check the fuel filter as well and injectors maybe. I have only been putting shell V power nitro in any car I drive- be it mine or the loaner.

I'm amazed at you guys who post good MPG with these vehicles. I couldn't even hit 20 MPG if you paid me!

When I asked about gas I was more referring to 87, 89, 91, 93 etc. And I think you might have been confused by my original post, I was trying to say my gas mileage was worse after changing my fuel filter, not better. I would doubt there is any issue with your fuel filter after 15k.

Ah ok. I use 93 . And no I understood your post. I am just asking them to take a look so if they find something funky, they can take care of it. Maybe its just my leadfoot but just want to make sure

I'm with you...I'm either driving in traffic or my foot planted to the floor. I would be thrilled with 20mpg lol

I waste no time in getting up to my cruise speed, and I've heard of people with similarly configured S6 (same color even...) getting 24mpg or better at 80 on freeways regularly. My last airport run I achieved I think it was 33mpg or somewhere close to that on the DIS. Traffic and cities I'm pretty much in the 19-22mpg range.

low to mid teens in my S6. Daily commute is only about 10 miles, but traffic kills me. Subsequently, when an opening presents itself, I usually take it enthusiastically. Fair amount of short trips on the weekend aren't helping, and it's rare that I can get a full week on a tank. Traffic is undoubtedly playing a big part in my low mpg. With relatively light traffic this week, I filled up on Sunday and am at half a tank as of this am. Normally I'd be scrubbing fumes at this point.

Alright so just wanted to update you guys- I still have the loaner since only 1 guy can work on my car at the dealership and he was slammed with a q7 body harness job. I have successfully fucked the fuel economy of the loaner also 😎
    Few things-
People with eurocode AK- check the bolt torque if you start hearing clunks from the front
Slightly harsh gear shifts are common in mornings, especially in cold weather.
As much as I didnt want to hear it, the foreman also told none of the open element kind aftermarket intakes are worth it. So maybe guys who have dyno charts of before and after can check this for us. He said that drop in a high flow filter in the stock airbox and it should be good enough. I do know that most of us went with those intakes for the sound but if we are losing power, I would gladly go back to the stock airbox.

Are you driving in auto or dynamic mode? I'm sure that makes a difference in mpg.
