My old A6 is being sold by its current owner. 211,000 miles!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    So I sold my A6 3.2 s line in 2011 with 170k miles.
I bought it in 2009 with 90k. Never broke down or needed repair.

The owner called me and told me he was listing it for sale, with 211k miles. Still hasn't broke down or needed any repairs. Talk about reliable.
It's the car I've regretted selling every single day since I sold it in 2011. I've actually called him every single year for 5yrs to buy it back.
But, with a baby due in 3 weeks and not having the cash laying around I won't be buying it back. Not taking a 4k loan on a 211k audi.

That many miles does kinda scare me still. lol

He said he'd let me have it for 4,000. KBB is 5500. But oh well.

PS: When he bought it, he blacked it all out. I had it beautiful. Oh well.

But man, I wonder how many more miles before some serious stuff starts happening. No guides or anything for sure in the last 120k miles...(since 90k when I bought it, and thats if it was ever done before that)

Ever carbon cleaned? I have read those 3.2s are HORRIBLE when it comes to carbon buildup.

My 2007 is at 177k now, it'll be paid off early next spring at which point I'll be hovering around 200k or just under it. So far so good, only engine work has been normal maintenance and full carbon clean at 100k so I'll probably budget to do that again soon and a few seals were replaced. Hoping it lasts for a few years after that.

I remembr reading your threads and how you hit a deer once. You even turned me on to Fever Ray with the video you posted of the LED light install. Then you sold it to a guy who gave it to his kid who, in turn, wrapped everything he could in 3M carbon fiber look vinyl. It was a sad day for sure. Hopefully the new owner treats it better and brings it back to it's former glory.

Congrats on the new baby BTW.

Thanks. Yeah, the single only reason I sold it was I found an identical twin at a dealership with the v8 motor. I didn't put a deposit down though and it sold the same day mine sold.
I really wouldn't mind buying it, but I feel irresponsible to take a loan on it. But if it's under kbb it can't be a big deal being only 4k... lol ugh!
Since 90k it was never carbon cleaned. Mechanically never needed any work. I had to fix the right rear assembly but that was 100% my fault for
having fun in the snow and kissing a curb.
lol, I even considered a low mile motor cost if I did buy it but oh well. Hopefully in the next couple years financially things turn around and I pick up a much nicer, newer A6 and I can hold onto that for awhile.

Yeah, as you can see in the photos they spray painted the wheels black. And covered every chrome trim piece in fake carbon fiber decal.

When I had it, it was prestine!

I even tracked it in it's early days

Hard to beat a car that nice for 4k though.

If I buy something newer, I love these 2013ish 3.0t's

58k miles, $25,000 Not bad since kbb says it's worth 29,500 in very good which it is.

Why in the hell did he black out the headlight washers?
Great looking C6 in her glory days though. Love the red.

What do you guys think. For 4k, buy it with 211k miles knowing no issues since 90k. At the same time, no chain or guides either. That kinda stuff.

That's a tough call. It was your car previously so you know the history. How was it taken care of since you sold it?

Depends on how much you want the car and if you ever plan on selling it . Out of all that's I've had for me there's one car I would pay anything to have back and that's because my father was the original owner

Aside from the decals he hasnt destoyed it or anything. I was worried about the piston rings and blow by because the back end would have little carbon deposits. But, that was in 2011 and here it is 2016 and still driving and running.

I really, really, really liked that car. A lot. I would love to have it back, but from an investment standpoint I can't afford to buy it, the the motor blow and sink another few grand in a motor.
But, then I think about how if that happened I could drive it for another 100k. But, the rest of the car has got to start falling apart at some point, sensors, little pieces etc..

Wife kinda agrees I should wait until next year and if financially we're better that I should buy a newer a6 like the one above. Problem is, I love them EXCEPT the interior. I don't like it as much as the C6 A6.

    Well..
I went and test drove it today.
The owner said "Take it home, return it tomorrow"

    I did not. lol

I drove it, and fell right back in love. My wife did as well... lol
Sure, it needs a little love. The Fake CF stickers need to be peeled off. Needs a good wash and wax and
the only mechanical issue I could find was the throttle body was gunked up. It just needs to be cleaned. I had to do that when I bought it. I am sure it needs a carbon cleaning as well.
The front grill was replaced when a hitch from another truck went through it. And a new scratch on the back bumper. Also the air bag light is on, and said the rear center seat goes bad sometimes.
I'll have to vagcom it and check it out.

But, I got it out, stretched the legs and the transmission was sharp in S mode, Smooth as butter and felt like new all the way up past 120.
The Suspension felt firm and sharp in the corners, Smooth cruising and on the hwy, with 211K miles!
I did hear what sounded like maybe some chain noise. I expected that though.... Also what sounded like injector tick from the motor.
Honestly all stuff I expected. Hell, I already priced out a low mile 3.2 just in case. $1,800 when that day comes. Or maybe a 4.2 swap. idk.

Needs tires and brakes but normal stuff.
The interior buttons are flaking pretty bad, but hell... they were doing that when I sold it to him 5 yrs ago.
Everything else still works. Power Steering felt like water at 1mph and firmed up as the speed increased just like when I sold it.

I got a guy looking at my truck in the morning. So hopefully it sells. I want this A6 back.
I still have a e39 540i 6 speed bmw and an 03 vw jetta. I'll probably sell the 540i, and just hold onto this jetta and the audi.

    We'll see!

Dirty bay.... But, I guess what do you expect if it hasnt been cleaned in 5yrs. They put 30k miles on it in the 5yrs they had it.

Lots of carbon output, I figure the rings are getting blowby? It did this even in 2010 when I had it at 90k miles. Of course, I cleaned it so it never got this bad...

It averaged 32mpg at 80mph. the 9.8 was in the driveway...
You can see the bubbling material though... I guess I could oder that or just repaint it
like a charcoal with clear coat.

start/stop button looked like that when I sold it to him. Good reason to upgrade to the newer one. lol

Yeah, test drove it again last night to check the AFS headlights and make sure they worked. Flawless, almost forgot how much the headlights moved with steering angle. love it. needs a new bulb and probably even the bowls redone but I'd like to upgrade to the newer ones with the leds on bottom, but still afs.
I'd like to go a step further with the new lights and retrofit better projectors in... But that'll be a lot of work. I don't even know if the lights can be baked to be opened or if you have to cut the back sides of them. Not sure how the projectors on the 2010's are... if they are better than the 05-09s... The step on the 06 is pretty massive, I never remembered it being so large compared to a lot
    of retrofits ive done.

I actually don't mind the window trim being wrapped, but i'm not sure how I feel about it being fake carbon fiber vinyl over some regular regular black vinyl...
Obviously I'm pulling it off the headlight washers, rear parking sensors, rear badges and fuel door. But not sure about the window trim and rear deck lid.

    Tomorrow.
I'm on shift today (24hr) so when I get off in the morning I'll get the rest.
I sold my 2001 F150 yesterday for $3,000. So i'll get the rest and pick it up at some point tomorrow, just in time for cars and coffee Saturday.
I could sell the jetta I just bought last week for 600 but the wife said nope, so I need to fix my E39 540I that i have and let that go. It'll fund some audi parts.

I'm not letting go of the car this time.

    lol

So, I drove it home and its like 100*F or a couple over and got caught in a bunch of traffic from a wreck. Crawled at 2mph for 30minutes and the temp gauge went to hot.
I pulled into a parking lot and turned it off. Had my wife bring me the obd2 bluetooth scanner so I could read the ecu temps and make sure it wasn't a bad gauge.
It cooled down and I went to the the tags for it.
Got the title and tags and drove home about 30minutes.
It stayed about 215.6* F but crept up to 217*F at one point, but the needle didn't go back to hot or anything.

Whats the normal operating temp. I'm guessing a thermostat or waterpump. Which, I know for a fact haven't been touched in 120k miles so it wouldn't surprise me....

thermostat is $30 and waterpump is $50. Not bad, and If I can DIY it I will.... So we'll see.
Im letting it cool down all the way and going to test drive it again and see if it gets hot. It may have been a fluke and being so hot. weeks ago my wifes 08 Pathfinder did the same thing.
Went to hot in a drivethrough after driving fam to the airport. It's been fine since....

I told my wife and the seller (who offered to take the car back and return money, I said NOPE) that the car is just giving me a hard time for selling it in the first place. lol

So I found this unplugged behind the driver foglight. the part number only shows up as front bumper harness... I didn't know anything not working so I don't know what it went to...

Obviously I plugged it up. :shrugs:

    A couple of things, @JPJ2007

    1. Congrats on re-aquiring the car.
    2. Time to change your signature line to (SOLD AND BOUGHT BACK) LOL
    3. The overheating issue could be just a fluke. I would start by flushing the cooling system and refilling. If the coolant has been neglected, it is not going to be efficient. Then I would change the cap to the coolant tank. If this is starting to leak pressure, then that could cause the temp to climb. I doubt it is a thermostat since they either fail to open or fail to close. If it failed to open, the car would overheat quickly and be consistant becauase coolant isn't flowing through the motor. If it fails to close, then it takes a long time for the car to get warm but won't over heat becasue the coolant is flowing.
    4. The plug that you found may be the wiring harness for the headlight washers. Did you test those prior to connecting?

Anyway, glad to see you got the car back and look forward to you bringing it back to the way it was when you parted with it.

    thanks!

    yeah I will haha
Yeah I think it was a fluke, I was giving it a hard time then got stuck in 105* traffic for 30min. Ive driven it 80miles since and it's been fine.

Yeah probably, didnt' think about that. I didn't test em, but I did make sure they worked after on the way home and they did.
