    Key won't turn in ignition

    Hey fellas,

In my wife's Avant, lately we've been noticing that the key was getting a little tricky to get it to turn in the ignition when first starting up in the morning. Yesterday, it refused to turn practically at all. I can get it to barely turn enough just to activate the radio, but the steering wheel won't unlock, and I can't get it to stay in acc mode.

So, I'm sure that I need at least a new ignition switch. But I'm wondering if I should also get the whole assembly. I read on this DIY that if the key won't move at all, I'm going to need the whole assembly.

Finally, on this site, part #11 is an "ignition cyl, without key".

I guess I'm just trying to determine whether I need that ignition cylinder. Is that part also known as the "lock ring"? If I do need it, can I use my current keys with it, or does that open up a whole new fun can of worms?

It's worth a try of placing powdered graphite on the key and in the key hole. This helped my B7 A4 ignition to turn easier.

Thanks for the suggestion, doughboy. That worked! I was able to get the key to the Acc position, which is what I need in order to remove the ignition switch. I really appreciate the advice.

Glad it worked! However, are you sure you actually need to replace the switch? Maybe just the graphite will solve the problem ...? My son just got his driving permit and I am having to coach him how to wiggle the steering wheel back and forth a bit while turning the ignition key even with fresh graphite applied.

they also sell a liquid graphite type thing for locks, it goes in liquid then drys leaving the graphite in places it would normally have a hard time reaching in powder form, I have no idea how I ended up with a spray can of it but it works a treat on locks
