Why do they include a head gasket? Why don't they include upper/lower covers? I know the answer is "because they are optional" but why?

We have at least 3 main vendors with kits, ECS, Europa and RSW. They are all different, and recommend different things.

I think it would be really beneficial if we could see a few official dealership work orders with parts breakdowns so we can see what they do.

They offer the head gasket with the kit, you don't have to buy it which is what I like about Europa. You can get it without the head gaskets. You can also add the valves which would make sense to get the head gasket. I'm personally doing valves as well so I'm getting the full kit. Covers are pointless unless yours are bent. The old ones can be cleaned.

I get all that, I am hoping that a vendor would reply as why they made their choices.

Europa has the head gasket as a default part in their kit, RSW has timing covers in their kit and no mention of touching the head at all, ECS Ultimate and Europa kits have the Upper and the Lower chain, RSW seems to offer the Upper chain

    RSW: http://redlinespeedworx.com/2-0t-tsi...chain-failure/
    Europa: https://www.europaparts.com/timing-c...0t-tsi-af.html
    ECS: https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B8_A4...ing/ES2592684/

As a DIY'er just hoping to gain some insight into the MUST do things, vs. the "while you're in there" things.

Europa seems to be the best all around kit as you can add or remove things you need or don't need. If you're doing just the chain tensioners and guides as a preventative swap then don't worry about the head. My engine jumped time and it is wise to change the valves when that happens as we have interference engines and chances are one or more valves has damage. Once you touch the valves you have to do new gaskets. If your engine hasn't jumped time then just do the tensioner as that is the issue with our cars. You don't have to do the chain but it's right there and not expensive.

Ok so I ordered the Europa kit with valves and no tensioners. I order tensioners from AUDI directly at a significant discount to their retail. If you order online from AUDI you can save up to 30%. Main tensioner alone was 112 at my dealer and 74 online.

I think I listed out the main components you will need to replace when doing this job in the DIY thread I wrote about the timing tensioner / chain.

I went through all of those vendors as well and honestly, I went with ECS, got the ultimate timing kit and other bolts and components that are needed to be replaced along the way.

I went with ECS, but basically, all of the kits are incomplete.

I had my entire Timing system and valves changed and after putting it back together they discovered a misfire in Cyl 3 with my compression at 30psi Theyre now talking about changing out the block which would require removing the entire engine. If my car was a human being I would throat punch that bitch so fast. Or punch her int he cooter, I dont care.

I have the kit installed. I used the entire europa kit with the exception of the tensioner, went oem for that. 5k miles on it and no issues so far.

Any part can be added or deleted from the Europa's kit as you desire. I've ordered a handful of timing kits from Europa. Prices are great, parts are OEM, shipping is fast and absolutely no one offers as much flexibility in timing kits as them. Three thumbs up for EuropaParts!

FYI an "OE supplier" is making the same part you buy at the dealership.

i bought the chain and tensioner from europa, oem ones good value. i actually didnt have the tensioner at the time available with me so i just ended up getting one locally from the shop that did it, they got the same one at the dealer at wholesale cost. i was gonna return this but been over the return period so i still have the tensioner, i can sell for a fair price if you're interested in that, and you can get the chain and rest of the stuff off europa.

Did the OEM tensioner fail? How many miles on your B8?

Some parts are OEM. Most of them in the Europa kit arent. I ordered the new tensioner direct from Audi and picked up the rest of the kit from Europa. I got the OE valves from them as well. Obviously OE Supplier makes the same part as the dealer but some people want OEM and dont want aftermarket parts.

I think you missed the part where I said I did my entire timing system and valves.

No matter where you buy your kit ALWAYS buy oem for stuff like timing chain kits. Its worth the extra money to be assured the job is done right the first time.

Oh and if you don't do the timing yourself most Audi dealerships probably wont touch the non oem parts. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Not sure you guys understand what is going on here. Audi manufacturers very little parts. Car companies are mostly just assemblers of parts made by other companies. The tensioner you buy at the dealership is made by a company which Audi pays to put their logo on. These manufacturers also make the exact same parts on the same manufacturing lines in the same factories, only without the little Audi logo, which they sell through other avenues. These are not aftermarket attempted copies of factory parts. Buying from the dealership is paying extra for a logo on a part that is no different from the 'OE supplier' part.

Right, unfortunately not all of these kits are made by the same companies that are OEM providers, i always follow suit with part numbers. But your point is 100% valid.
