    Hi guys
I need to change my battery. But i heard if i change my battery it has to be cod it, using vac-com.
If i buy the battery from the dealer do i still need a coding ? Or is it just for the after market batteries ?
Dealer want to charge over $200 for installation.

Doesn't sound right. I disconnected my battery recently to install new steering wheel and no issues when turning back on.. Maybe this is different ?

Disconnecting is one thing...replacing is another and ,yes, it will have to be coded and only Auid OEM batteries come with the code on the battery. Some have found a hack if you search.

    Thanks for reply.
Yes u right i stopped by couple battery shop and saw the batteries they recommended to my car. But it didn't have the code on battery.
Do u know what would happen if i buy the after market battery and instal it without coding ?
Is it going to show some silly light ? Or is going to destroy my electric?

This is what I have read in the B8/8.5 forums concerning battery swaps. I am not sure if it applies to the C7's but I won't be surprised if it did. When the battery you plan to replace is at its end of life but still has enough power in it, just disconnect it and replace it with a new battery. As long as the car did not go into power saving mode, you do not need to recode the new battery using VAGCOM. The car will run OK with no issues. However, if the car went into power saving mode due to a dying battery, you will need VAGCOM and recode the new battery. If not, it will still be in power-saving mode.

How to recode using VAGCOM. Just change the last three digits of the battery serial number that shows up in VAGCOM. After that, you are all set. The car will now know that it just got a fresh battery.

Vagcom, Just need to change the last digit of the serial number on the right side, so the serial number is new and the battery manager resets, to learn the new battery is in place.

The stock battery is not cheap, $186 At Autozone.

Thanks for the reply. I will definitely try that I don't think my car is in power saving mod but still i need jump start a car even after driving for while.
Do u think this would work if I swapped the battery with after market battery? Or it has to be audi OEM battery ?

    Another question about coding.
If had to cod the new battery the last 3 digit number has to be match on the new battery that i am swapping? Or it just a random numbers ?

Just change the original last 3 digits of the serial number to anything and the car will know its a new battery. You need to go to 19 CAN and then Adaptation and select battery info/replacement

This works on aftermarket batteries, like the Autozone one I posted. The battery module, just needs to know it is a new battery (new serial number).

My Autozone battery had a serial number on the side, next to a faint QR looking marking on the side.

No, it does not need to be the OEM Audi battery. However, I have read in the forums that the OEM Audi battery on some instances can be bought cheaper than aftermarket replacements. It won't hurt to find out how much your Audi dealer is selling the OEM battery and compare with the aftermarket alternatives.

What morski and wwhan said above, you do not need to match the serial number when coding a battery. Just any random number will do.

I believe the OEM Audi batteries are manufactured by VARTA. The OEM VW battery in my '11 VW GTI was VARTA. I replaced it with a MotoMaster that is sold by Canadian Tire here in Canada. No coding issues. Like you, my battery just died one day. I got a boost from AAA then drove to Canadian Tire to buy a new battery. Changed in the parking lot and the car is good to go.

VARTA is owned by Johnson Controls. Johnson Controls manufactures batteries under Duralast, Interstate, and Die Hard. In VAGCOM, when coding the battery serial number, the software will have a drop-down menu asking you to specify the battery brand in the form of a three digit/letter combo code. You can either disregard this one or code it to the correct battery manufacturer. It is not really necessary.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys i learned a lot :)

I didn't have a proper VAGCOM. So tried to use cable from amazon but some reason it didn't work.
So I decided to just replace the battery and see what happens and i did it today. Bought a battery from advance auto part and replaced it. I think It working fine. It start the car and drive few miles I don't have any error codes or anything now.
Hopefully nothing would happens after driving for while.
