How to properly drive the DSG?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I love driving manual b/c I can pick my gears, rev the engine to match and put it into gear.

I'm not sure how to drive the DSG properly. Until my warranty expires, I am not getting TCU tune. I hate how D shifts so early, but don't drive with S when my fiance is in the car b/c she says it's too rough.

Do you guys downshift when slowing or let the car drop gears? In my manual I neutral usually to a stop or if I know I need power, I rev engine and into 2nd gear usually it goes. I usually do N b/c I figure engine braking all the time isn't the best idea.

    Any thoughts?

for once, oddly enough, you can let it do all the work the vast majority of the time.

    I drive in manual mode like a manual,i listen/watch rpm's and shift..
I also down shift to use engine braking and save brake wear also to build boost for passing..

try to get the dealer to flash the newest tcu tune if you haven't had that done. when I bought my s6 I was having the same issues, S mode would be super harsh, especially the 2 to 1 downshift coming to a stop. I have the tcu reflashed and it shifts great now, I drive in both manual and S mode with my wife and kids in the car and no complaints.

So I love the transmission but am not a huge fan of the shift points at all. I spend 90% of the time in Dynamic mode but feel when it is not in manual it upshifts way to early most of the time. I like to roll on the throttle and when I do that not in manual mode, as I start to give it more gas to take off the thing upshifts. My new thing is actually driving on the freeway in manual mode in dynamic. Because I always like to be in Dynamic (Just in case if you know what I mean) but if I am in non manual mode it always wants the car to be in 6th gear. So this way I can be ready for whatever comes my way but also cruise in 7th gear a good amount of the time.

Simple - Drive it like any other automatic transmission, then flick a paddle whenever you want manual control. After several seconds, if you don't do anything else with the paddles, it will revert to whichever automatic mode you were in previously.

This dsg is the worst auto I have driven in an Audi. The person that writes the software for the S6/7 should be sacked. It has been terrible since the day the C7 was released. The S4/5 is so much better. If I get rid of my S6 early it will be due to how bad the transmission is. I still hold out hope that the Unitronic TCU tune will transform this transmission to what Audi should have released. Fingers crossed I will have the tune soon...

    I've owned both, and I don't agree.

The S4's throttle response is much better, but the DSG programming to me seems about a wash (after the dealer flashed my S6's ECU and TCU to the latest and greatest software version).

I never understood this notion of waiting until your warranty expires before modding your car. Do you think your car is any less likely to break down after the warranty expires? All this does is prevent you from enjoying the mod for the first 4 years of ownership. And....if it has been good enough in stock form for 4 years, why start messing with it now, when you will definitely have to pay out of pocket if anything breaks?......something you were obviously not prepared to risk before. The only time this type of reasoning makes sense is if you purchase a used car already out of warranty.

I personally think the TCU tune makes more of a difference in daily driving than the ECU tune. You can feel the benefits of the TCU tune in most driving situations while the ECU tune needs a more select set of circumstances to really enjoy. Even the TCU tune with a stock ECU is quite enjoyable.

Coasting in neutral isn't the best practice, it uses slightly more fuel and brakes. There's not much added wear from engine braking.

If you ever take a CDL test, it's an automatic fail. Transmission always has to be in the proper gear to remain in control should you need to accelerate for whatever reason. That and many semi transmissions need the main countershaft rotating in order to provide lube. Costing to a stop won't ruin it fast, but coasting down a hill or towing without dropping shaft or pulling axles can ruin them.

The only DSGs I've driven were in TDI VWs, they shifted very early, but I assumed that was normal due to being a TDI. If anything, when you went to sport mode it felt like they held onto gears way too long at WOT. I'd say the same for the tiptronic in my A6, feels faster at 3/4 throttle than full throttle. Could just be the way the power feels though, the TDIs set you back right away but you don't get the sensation of more power with more throttle and RPMs like you do with most gas engines.

I hardly ever drive in manual mode, but I will use the paddles to up/downshift whenever the need arises - usually when Im slowing for lights that I know are about to change, or roundabouts (traffic circles)

S mode is too harsh around town for me, although when joining fast roads/motorways/freeways I will usually drop into S mode to quickly join the flow.

My last few cars have all been automatic Audis - although not performance ones. Cant say I have any issues with the DSG, but then Im not putting mine on the track or using launch control.
