    Car shaking briefly after engine fires up

    Gents,

    Does anyone else notice if their B9 shakes/vibrates right after starting the car? I noticed this only lasts for 1-2 seconds while still in park and usually on a cold start. My Audi dealer said it was a known issue but there is no fix for it yet.

    Also, ride noise on the stock tires that come with the Sport Package is fairly high, or is it just me? TireRack gave the tire (PIRELLI CINTURATO P7) an 8.3 for noise but it rides like a 6

    My B9 also has some little engine wobbles right after cold start as well, only lasts a few seconds, feels like 3 or 4 misfires then all is smooth

    I am also riding on same tires, smooth as silk, super quiet, I am on stock, non-sports, non-adaptive suspension

    Not sure if it makes you feel better, but my B8 has had the shakes during the start-up process since it was new. I have assumed it was a characteristic of the 2.0T.

    Yes, my car's engine seems to stumble a little after a cold startup. Sometimes it feels like it's about to stall ...

    It's strange, because my B8.5 A5 did not have any shakes at all. I'm having the Audi team look at it tomorrow and will post any updates on here.

    I have those tires on a 2014 A4. Wait till around 15K miles, and it will be even worse.

    I used to get it every summer but not any more. what helps is i pump the throttle before every time i start the engine with ignition on, and it doesnt seem to happen

    I notice that too. I had come from a B8.5 S4 (different engine, I know) - which didn't have that problem, I thought maybe it's the 2.0 engine? I wonder if other B8 A4s had that issue.

    I had the B8.5 A5 with the 2.0T and never experienced any shaking. Service dept is looking into it as we speak

    They simply said that nothing unusual was found after performing various tests and it is not uncommon for the B9 A4 to shake at the start. Seems to be a known issue without any fixes yet. Yay for getting the first model year car and being part of an experiment I guess

    My Acura (and I imagine other cars) purposely misfires on cold start to get the cats warmed up.

    Same problem with my B9 A4 (I guess). On cold start engine will go to 1200 RPM, and if I don't change gear it shakes for about 1min until RPM falls to 800. Sent car to dealer and they say it's normal...

    That is not normal...might wait till 2018 A4 lol.

    it doesnt matter if its the 2020 A4, issue was here since the 2009 A4 with the 4 cylinder. I lent my car to the dealer overnight, leaving it outdoors to bake in the sun, instructing them to cold start it every 2 hours with it hooked up to the computers. they have confirmed misfire but didn't bother to investigate since I got TD1 then.

    I don't have an issue with my 2012 A4....or maybe I'm not noticing what everyone else is noticing.

    It's normal and common in many new vehicles. Some may be more noticeable than others.

    Just noticed this as well. Warm weather and it has some jitters in the first 30 seconds or so after initial start. I don't mind it, much better than my old B7 2.0T shaking issue.

    Same here 2012 Q5 2.0T.Getting jitters on cold start after RPM drops to 800 works normal. I thought I'm the only one with this "problem".

    Had mine do this, swapped ignition coils and spark plugs for those on RS3, problem solved. Gen 3 2.0T quattro B9

    Have same cold start idle vibration problem. Have detail info the the parts you put in?

    i bought all OEM, gave 2 vins 1 for friend’s rs7 performance (spark plugs), and 1 for friend’s RS3 all OEM. both their cars are 2018

    My 2018 B9 Allroad does this on start up too at high idle. Goes away after it returns to 800 from 1200 ish. The car does this because of the SAI pumping extra air to lean out the fuel rich start up. It honestly serves zero purpose except to more quickly heat up your Catalytic converter. Once the SAI turns off and it returns to normal 800 rpm idle its smooth...and then if you feather the gas in park up to 1200 its still smooth because the AFR is correct. The reason it stumbles is because the car is purposely fucking up the AFR to heat up your CATs. I'm sure somebody could code it out and prevent it from happening since it really doesnt serve any purpose except appeasing the EPA...

    You may also notice that in some extreme cold start-up situations, the SAI will not come on fully, or you will get a strange 900-1000 rpm high idle instead of the typical 1200. That's normal. Not sure why but I'm assuming at a certain temp/ certain conditions the car is programmed to ignore the emissions high idle procedure.

    What's annoying is that My B8.5 Allroad cold high idle was smooth and not lumpy like the B9....nor is my B5 S4's. So not really sure what the deal is with that.

    My engine is 2.0 TFSI 252 HP, and when i start the car it shakes that badly, like my old 1.9TDI (diesel 2002) car.
    Also on idle the cars has some subtle shakings.

    Mine does the exact same thing. Dealer told me it was normal, never mentioned anything about a fix or that it was even being looked at. So I’m assuming it’s just a characteristic of the 2.0T.

    I wish I could find the article I read last year about this "problem". It has to do with the startup process of the engine and is normal for many new cars including the A4. If I can find the article I will post it to this thread.

    Here is a technical article which discusses the problem of warming up the converter.

    The idea is to retard the timing significantly. I believe this makes for hotter exhaust gasses but is also not the optimal operating condition resulting in rough running.

    This is probably why the dealer says that it is normal.
