    Hub centric wheels question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I took my 2009 avant into Audi today and we were talking about wheel because one of the techs drove my car into a curb and it has curb rash on it now. They offered to fix it and I had mentioned I was looking at some after market wheels in the future, the tech responded to me never do that on audis they have to be hub centric or will vibrate bad at certain speeds. Is this true even if I buy a quality wheel?

You always want to have wheels with a center-bore that matches your hubs. That's applicable on any car, not just Audi's. There's nothing special about putting aftermarket wheels on an Audi. If you have the proper sized, quality wheels, it will be no different than stock.

If, by chance, you end up with wheels that have a larger center-bore than your hubs accommodate, you can utilize hub-centric rings to adapt them.

Many aftermarket wheels have a larger center bore, so they fit other vehicles not just Audis. Problem with that is that they will be very hard to center. This is called lug centric. The wheel lugs is the only thing that will center the wheels and that's usually not very accurate. However, there are things called hub rings. They are designed to fill the empty space between the wheel hub and the center bore. They come in various sizes. The alternative is to get an aftermarket wheel with the correct size center bore.

Was the guy giving you this bad advise the same guy who drove your car into the curb by any chance? If you buy wheels with a 66.6 center bore then there is no issue on your B8 (as far as hubcentricity is concerned). If you buy wheels with a larger center bore, you will need centric rings to convert them back down to 66.6. That's about all you need to know about that.

I had a tech diagnosing a high speed vibration in my car and they wouldn't even look at the car without another set of wheels on it. He told me and I quote "you have to spend $1500-2000 a wheel to get wheels made for Audis, bbs and ronal are the only wheels I would recommend..."
I laughed and went and spoke with the service manager. The dealer will pawn the problem off to the easiest scapegoat hey see so they don't have to do the hard work. It's all about the quality of the tech involved in the repair.
