Hard hard time taking off wheel today - Hub Rust

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I had a hard time taking off one of my rear wheels today but eventually got it off after a few kicks. Is it because of all this rust? Anything I can do to it?

    Two decent methods:

    1. Get a wire wheel adapter for a drill and use it to clean it up. Should take care of it easily.
    2. Use sandpaper (finer grit) to wipe it away.

To prevent that, you could cover the surface with something, whether it's paint or oil or something. Obviously not the discs though.

Put on some anti sieze. it will prevent it from occurring again

sand and apply antisieze, a trick to get a rust adhered wheel off the hub is to use another tire as a 'ram' to knock off the stuck wheel. works great and leaves no marks.

Can also slightly loosen the lugs and move the car back and forth.

Hard hard time taking off wheel today - Hub Rust

I live in PA and can run into similar things. Had a fun time taking out my wheel lugs last time. Although they are ECS brand to go with my spacers and not coated the best. Get a wire brush and go around the hub ring to knock down some of the rust and fine grit sand paper on the hub. Anti seize on the bolts when you put them back in.

I used a rubber mallet for one good "careful" wack on the backside of the tire edge. Careful it doesn't fly off face first lol.

^ I thought Anti seize on the bolts is a no no. You won't get a proper torque reading.

For us in the north east a few sprays of this on suspension parts or wheel lugs is a life saver lol. Hopefully it's good on the wheels lugs, I'd assume so. It helps them thread back in smoothly without fight.

It's not for the bolts, it's the lip of the wheel hub that gets chemically "welded" on. As others stated, wire brush the crud off, and put a little on the inside edge of the wheel hub, definitely not on any bolts.

If you look closely at the hub portion in this picture you can see I coated it with anti seize, its kind of rust colored. That is where you want to coat it.

I have those rotors on my S5, they aren't very "black" anymore if you look closely. I car & my wheels weekly so I don't let dirt cake on. Hopefully when I swap my new 20" wheels on this week a good scrubbing cleans off the stained residue. It's a bit more noticeable now as I have a 20mm spacer on the rear to get flush. Which pushes the wheel out almost 1" off the rotor exposing the rotor hat more than normal. I won't be using spacers with my new wheels so helpfully they clean up good and it's just dried residue on the rotor hat.

But like I said I don't think the hat part will be too exposed since I won't be running spacers with my new wheels. I'll break out some all purpose and a tooth brush and scrub them good while the wheels off .

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try the wire brush to scrub and apply some anti seize. I see Permatex makes Aluminum, Copper, Nickel anti seize. Which one is best to use? Also is there something I can spray on to clean the rust off quicker - maybe brake cleaner?

Becareful applying anti seize. Its OK to use, but use as little as needed. Once you start driving excess anti seize can get flung out all over the wheels and body panels. I had a little too much on one side and its a PITA to get off the wheels... guess i didnt noticed and it baked onto the wheels in sunlight.

Brake cleaner won't eat rust. You'd need something like CLR or a weak acid to do it (e.g., phosphoric acid which you can get via Coca-Cola, or Star-San if you're into homebrewing).

I don't think it matter which anti-seize you get. I used the normal grey/silver stuff with no issues.

So I cleaned it up with a brass wire brush attached to the drill and applied a very thin layer of anti seize.

i've only had experience with copper coat. that is what we would use out on the rigs. great stuff. but yes, no need to use a lot. that stuff can get everywhere and stayyyyyyyyy

ACF 50 http://www.skygeek.com/10013.html?ut...oFERoCl7vw_wcB is the most amazing rust preventive and rust removal product I have ever used. I just did my rotors, and they literally fell away, while my buddies car, two years newer and 30K less miles needed multiple hard wacks with a hammer to get the rotors off. I use this stuff very sparingly on the hub, and not a sign of rust. The hub in this picture is as I found it, and its 4 years old, and 40,000 miles.
