On an S-Tronic gearbox is it bad for the vehicle/tranny to switch from D to S or vice versa while moving?

He's got a point - you're more likely to produce a bang / stress the tranny if you hit the gas wrong shifting from D to S at speed. Doing it at a stop is always going to be healthier - that and taking your foot off the gas briefly while switching into sport.

Of course the counter to this is that the damn thing is designed to be shiftable while in motion. It just isn't always perfect.

If I feel the need to do this, I take my foot off the gas, pull it back to put it in sport, let it downshift, then roll from there.

But I USUALLY just push the stick over to manual, then downshift as necessary.

Yup - I often do the same depending on how lazy I'm feeling and/or how many gears I am away from the optimal.

You don't even need to move the shift lever to downshift with paddles, I do it all the time if I want some engine braking going down a hill, or if I want to make sure I'm in a particular gear exiting a corner. After about 30 seconds, the transmission reverts to automatic mode.

Computer won't let you eff it up. Switch till you're blue in the face. There are sensors at the shift lever that can go bad and they are SUPER expensive to fix because it can only be accessed from below the car and t requires the transmission be dropped and drained.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

What he said. I showed my fiancé this since she doesn't like messing with the shifter other than putting it in D. If we are on a back road with hills and in the highest gear and the car is getting "lazy" or producing a drone from being a gear too high. By clicking down once or twice it will put you in a nice torque range & essentially in manual mode. After a while depending how you are in the gas it will go back to D. Probably good for passing people on the highway i guess too.

Of course 9/10 times I prefer to just put the car in full manual and switch myself since the car is always shifts way to fast in D and always in a gear too high. If there's traffic I'll throw it in D. But i have switched back and forth all the time no problem, just make sure you are slamming the gas, just give it a sec do downshift and get on the gas again.

Don't usually have an issue doing it, although I am almost always off the gas when I shift. Its great for when you are getting on an acceleration lane onto the highway/interstate and need that extra 'speed.'

Just FYI, there was a (lengthy) thread on bumping over to manual from drive. Final outcome was that it's better to bump down to S before going over to manual mode, as this gives you the more aggressive throttle response once you're in manual. If you bump over to manual when in D, you don't get the extra responsiveness. When you do bump back over out of manual, you'll be in whatever mode you were before going to manual. (D or S)

Where do you keep the revs when in manual mode. Is btw 3 and 4K to high?
